I’m trying to understand why this happens and whether I’m missing something in the workflow.
I have carefully configured my filament profiles in Bambu Studio, including all the print settings for my third-party materials.
However, when I mount a third-party spool on the printer, I then have to use the printer’s onboard menu to manually set the filament type (e.g. PLA, PETG, etc.). The onboard interface is much more limited than Bambu Studio and only lets me select the basic material type.
the Materialprofiles i set in Bamboostudio are not available on the machine display.
My questions are:
Because thats not really what i am seeing.. i send a print with my special profile.. (Temps quite high).
when i check on the printer screen.. i can clearly see it tries printing with the wrong temps from the baseprofile
something is not working right.
What’s the correct workflow for people using third-party filaments without RFID tags?
I’m trying to understand how the printer decides which filament settings actually get used during a print. Any clarification from experienced users would be greatly appreciated.

All print parameters, including filament temperatures/flows/etc, are “baked into” the g-code generated by the slicer (Studio). Which physical filaments are used is finalized when sending a sliced file to the printer, or in the printer UI if loading a sliced file from a USB drive. But at the point of assigning filament, it’s really just the physical locations that matter (AMS slot or external spool) – no print settings are determined at that stage, that should all already be in the g-code.
For me, what the printer thinks is loaded for materials doesn’t really matter – generic or BL. I know lots of folks like their profiles to be synced between Studio and the printer, but personally I’ve never had a need for that (LAN mode only, here).
If you’re not seeing the correct temperatures used during a print, or anything else that doesn’t match the selected filament profile(s), I think there’s something else wrong there.

The short answer is that Bambu Studio sends over over all of your custom filament assigned spool values win the 3mf file sent to the printer. You have to make sure that you do not sync your filaments with your AMS in the filament section because it will wipe out your custom filament settings and replace them with your AMS values if they are different.
The printer itself will not do a detection, so to speak, with your custom filament assignments once you load a spool. Like @MaxThreeD mentioned the sliced file contents is what provides the printer with the g-code instructions and the filament profile characteristics.
You could always create a cube in Bambu Studio and assign one of your custom filaments to the cube and send it to print and then look to see if your printer is using the proper properties. If not, you can save your .3mf file as a .zip file. Uncompress it and look at the parameters in the metadata section to see if your mapping is actually taking affect. I know that may be a bit much but it is good way to see behind the scenes if your data is actually being captured correctly.

i have a h2c with 4 ams and am trying to print with 16 filaments, mostly 3rd party - when the slicer asks me to rearrange filaments to optimize for time, i am finding it impossible to tell which filament is which - you only have the color and minimal information, and it is just not possible to get all 16 correct - furthermore, by the time you are in the rearrange window, you can’t refer back to which part of the model was tied which filament originally- has anyone figured out a method to keep track of filaments in this situation? what am i missing?
