Why is there a support layer?

Can anyone tell me why there are support layers in this model starting at layer 40?
Candy Ball.gcode.3mf (5.3 MB)

are you talking about all the supports starting all around the object

I don’t see anything remarkable about layer 40, but there is a gap in the model from layer 42 to 54.

Layer 44 is mostly Top surface, 45 has a small area of bridging with overhang walls but is otherwise empty. 46 is mostly support built on the empty areas of layer 45.

Layer 53 is also mostly empty except for a tiny area at the tip of the chute.

Sometimes it easier to see exactly what is happening if you activate the single layer view at the bottom right of the window.

I am pretty sure the problem needs to be fixed in the modelling program, but it is hard to be sure without the CandyBall.3mf project file. The gcode.3mf does not provide your project settings and we are unable to try alternate settings, check dimensions, wall thicknesses, etc.

Here is the full model 3mf file

That project file helps a lot. The model (Candy Ball.obj) has two small areas with non-manifold edges. You can see them as black spots in the Prepare tab. Those spots correspond to the missing layers when Studio slices the model - it cannot generate a structure for areas that are not a closed mesh.

If you are using the Windows version of Studio you can just right-click the model and select “Fix model” and the gaps will be filled.

If you are using Mac or Linux, the model will need to be fixed in the modelling program or you may be able to find an online repair tool. I’m afraid I cannot make a recommendation as I seldom encounter this problem and when I do Windows can usually correct it for me.

Thanks Heaps!
I did see those 2 areas but didn’t understand the significance of them. Now I know and have learned something as well. And I have windows, so all is good.
