I totally agree with you that it is absurd that you can only change the speed mode AFTER the print starts. It really should be on the Send Print Job screen.
I am almost sure that this is for the simple reason, that people forget to change this back to normal.
When you start a print job, the printer will always start on normal.
What is the gain on having it in the send menu?
Saving 30 seconds before you can activate it?
The setting is there if you want to speed up for a prototype. I sometimes use it, but I always wait until the first layer is finished, to make sure that my bed adhesion is good.
If you think that 165% should be your standard speed, then that is what you need to set in your profile as standard.
But keep in mind that you are usually going beyond the maximum volumetric speed, and therefore reducing the strength of the part.
Why should I have to baby sit the printer until the first layers are good so THEN I enable Silent/Sport/etc? I don’t baby sit it for any other print. Press send, check on it in 30-60min. This is the reason we bought Bambu printers.
If it was on the Send screen, the printer obviously could limit itself to the “Initial Layer Speeds” which are in the profile and then adjust for the speed settings after that layer.
It isn’t 30 seconds… waiting till the first layer is complete is 5+min with bed leveling, etc. (TBH I haven’t tested when you can actually set it to a different speed, but if I have to wait for the first layer it could be awhile)
It could of course reset each time to Normal. I only print prototypes 10-20% of the time. when I would want Sport speed. Also there are rare occasions that I want silent mode.
This is purely a matter of convenience.
Max volumetric speeds and the speed modes are an entirely different subject. That would be an argument against having the speed modes at all.
BTW: I used to have this setup with Home Assistant before the MQTT lockdown. It was great. I had an automation that if the file name ended with “_{speed mode}” it would wait till layer 4 and then change the speed automatically. Since the lockdown the HA add-in can’t adjust speed without going into Developer LAN mode. BTW This isn’t complaint, as I could work around it, but would love this functionality on the Send screen.
Use the real tool - the slicer. You will get the advantage of your job actually obeying the limits you’ve made, while still optimizing to the maximum speeds.
Because if you didn’t, or someone didn’t, the minute it went south and busted something posts about how dumb it is it starts right away and how Bambu is stupid would show up left and right.
Or you could simply change it once it’s sent in the slicer. You don’t have to wait for the print to start to change it. It will do the first layer at the slower speed then kick up once it’s done. Add that to number one as well.
Again, no one tells you to stand there. Send print, go to device, set to sport etc. It will stay for a second or two then show normal speeds. Once first layer is done it will kick up. This is reallyt the same comment as 1 and 2.
Cool. See above. Don’t tell me it doesn’t because I do it all the time.
Before you tell me I’m wrong because it doesn’t speed up right away, it doesn’t speed up on the first layer. You will have to make adjustments to the profile if you wish to do all layers. Once the first layer is done it will speed up. I’ve done this several times. I would wait most of the times though, cause I’m not impatient and want things easy cause me.
EDIT. Make sure the file is sent. I guess you’ll have to wait after all, the horror.
Ok, this is going to take more than 30 seconds but I will wait around and help you out. Even though I had it set in the first reply. I’m angry now that I have to wait.
You made statements. In reply or not you made statements that were not quite correct.
You do not need to wait around any longer than it takes for the file to be sent to the printer. Once it is you can change it to “Sport” or whatever you want and walk away. So your complaints about having to wait around “30 seconds” are null. Unless it takes 30 seconds to send it to the printer.
It works like this.
<–This is what you said.
I then told you why, then I explained why you don’t have to babysit the first layer.
I then took every comment you said, and explained why you don’t have to babysit the first layer and that you could choose sport or whatever as soon as the printer had the file.
I’ve just explained it twice. See this is an open forum. Meaning anything you say can and probably will be commented on by anyone. So although your reply was to someone else, I decided to also explain how you were, well wrong. I was trying to help you, understand.
I’ve now taken a bit more than 30 seconds to reply, however I think it was worth it to make sure my point was made and it went down well and clear.
I’d change the speed of my reply but it’s too late now. I’ve been here too long.
You don’t have to. I was just telling you that I was doing that.
That is something that you didn’t mention earlier. You just wanted a speed selector on the send screen.
This would require an additional option like: set speed mode after first layer.
And the printer would to keep track of all the first layers if you print by object.
I think this one is already explained enough now.
If you use it that often, you might still consider to create a specific profile for it.
I fully understand that.
Personally, if it would be worth so much to me, I would request this enhancement to Bambu Labs.
I was just trying to explain the effect.
But clearly, you understood this already.
I sometimes ask counter questions to stimulate others to think about what they are asking. Not to offend them.
I hope I wasn’t giving you the feeling that I was offending you.
Because that was not the goal of my response.
I don’t mind waiting until after the print starts, but I wish that I could see how much of a difference it will make before I change anything.
For example, once I’m already printing, If I have to leave in 2 hours, will changing to 165% make it be ready before I leave? or will it still be ready 20 minutes after I leave in stead of 2 hours after I leave in which case the speed means nothing to me.
That’s what I wish I could see before I change anything, especially on long prints where I sliced thinking I would be home all day but plans changed mid print.
I think the reason why there are no speed modes before you start a print is that it is completely unnecessary.
Instead, just create a profile with adjusted speeds and accelerations and save it, e.g. as sports or ludicrous mode if you want. It has exactly the same effect while obeying the flow limits in the filament profile, which the speed modes just ignore blatantly.
You could also just use the existing draft profiles if you want a print to finish faster.
The speed modes in my opinion are more useful if you change your mind during the print. E.g. it still takes 50 minutes but you absolutely need it in 40.
I often use silent mode, when I start a print in the evening but we go to bed before it finishes.
