Why We’re Upgrading Our Points System

I’m glad to see the cheating being adressed, but now i don’t understand WHEN i will get points (download and prints)… i can’t see how close i am just by looking at my designs and profiles…

I uploaded a new model yesterday that I think will gain a decent amount of downloads/prints. I’ll be interested to see how points are awarded on this model compared to the old system and see if there are any correlations. The first two days in the new system have been above average for me, but it’s too early to draw any conclusions.

Makerworld has been generous for designers and helped them build a 3D empire. I see no reason they wouldn’t be motived to keep improving and growing the system, bringing in fresh new designs regularly, while limiting low-quality, low-effort work as well as those cheating the system.

So it’s worse  Waaaay worse. Less information = bad.
Also - how would one know whether the points were throttled by AI? Any way for an honest creator to avoid “false positive” or say “hey, i think I’ve got less points than I should and I know I haven’t cheated”?

Or turning the dial down and saying “nah” to everyone, like in that “fun” ai auto-rejecting all applicants ('Lazy and Mediocre' HR Team Fired After Manager's Own CV Gets Auto-Rejected in Seconds, Exposing System Failure | IBTimes UK)

Or maybe not. It’s too vague and too opaque. And that… Well, that reminds me of The Gulag Archipelago and in it the description of Soviet law and it’s arbitrary application.

I, however, am of the opinion that are men are created equal and so are all models, so a “ultimate filament clip” designed in 5 mins of cad deserves same amount of points for 10 download as perfectly sculpted and tested over the months ultra intricate mechanism that was also downloaded 10 times… (Obviously as long as those downloads aren’t fraudulent etc)

I think I’ve said similar thing when they were messing around boosts where they said you’ll get less boosts for boosting ‘bad’ models without clearly stating which models are ‘bad’. They could simply remove “boost” button from ‘bad’ model and clarify to creator why the model isn’t boost-worthy.

I uploaded a big model, many build plates worth, half a kilo of filament, 20 step detailed assembly guide, each one with a detailed photo, the model requires 40+ screws in two different screw sizes.

It is a garden located squirrel feeder based on an Adirondack chair.

It has received 0 downloads.

I designed a single piece stackable door stop, no screws, zero assembly required.

It has received 1090 downloads.

What can we learn from this.

Well, the users choose what they want no matter what BL wants.

If the simpler thing is flying off the metaphorical shelves and the chair has shifted a single thing, then complex isn’t is the sole criteria and simple shouldn’t be dismissed as irrelevant.

I agree, it’s worse and much less transparent. It is what it is.

As Malcolm said, not all models will reach wide audience. But I see that now niche stuff is penalized. I got around 90 points for 17th and 15 points for the 18th and no boosts since Monday… I would usually have around 700points, 1200 on a better week. And downloads did not drop. So far I can say that I see significant drop in reward for me and criteria being secret does not seem fair. I also wait for Monday to see how many boosts my models will receive

No one is going anywhere. This is particularly true for those who announce they are moving because of reduced rewards. They will not go anywhere else for exactly the reason that they cited: rewards. No other platforms offer the same level of rewards as MW does, even if it’s reduced for some and increased for some others to be more fair to all.

If there is a platform that has better rewards, all of us will have been there by now. Why wouldn’t we? We will be all busy on the other platform and won’t have any time to come here to post the bluffs.

But we have seen this before. For every change, people will threat to either not uploading to MW anymore or not buying BL printers anymore. Some probably have said these for the Nth time  and are still here.

If there is a significant change to points I think it would be a good time for those who are skilled to try making money on platforms like thangs and patreon. Assuming you care about keeping your hobby free. I’ve done it. I still think makerworld is the best platform overall so I’d like to see everyone be able to have success here. But if I’m not at least getting reimbursed for my plastic I’m using to prototype I’ll move on to somewhere that values my creations.

As of right now, the turntable has a total of 199 downloads and 33 builds. Not bad for a model that has been out for 1 week, but that would have been worth something under 500 points under the old system, right? The screenshot shows 16,980 points! If real that is ridiculous. I am not disparaging the model, as it looks like a decent model and it is right in line with the contest, but if you search for “Photobox with Turntable” you get a couple of dozen models, that all have a very similar design, so I don’t see this as very original.

Again, what I hate about the new system is its lack of transparency.

I think that photo is just a joke; the points can be easily modified with the “inspect” tool.

Thanks for understanding a joke. I though that was pretty obvious

I generally agree but that’s not entirely true. Maybe not completely go away but at least start looking at other platforms, even if they didn’t feel the need before. I am such an example  It’s not the fault of this update of course, but there have been several other reasons that have caused this. Sometimes people just need some motivation

OK, I took the bait. My fault! It was pretty obvious. But the lack of transparency is the big issue here. Makes ridiculous things seem possible.

Glad to see some changes coming.

I just checked my model data. I don’t have a single model where points per download increased under the new system. So far it looks like a huge nerf wearing lipstick.

Well, day two and a 60% hit. Bummer, but it is what it is

wow great @MakerWorld, all my models were said to be high quality, I spent time on them, but now they’re standard quality?
Are you kidding me? Everything I offer is designed, never a copy, tons of testing to produce a quality piece to ultimately be standard, whereas tons of objects are literally my AI-generated ■■■■?

Just 12 points from models in the last 2 days but a lot of boosts. Many more boosts than usual!!!
