Why We’re Upgrading Our Points System

No one is mad.

They are changing a very explicit rule for rewarding downloads and prints with something completely hidden and self-managed, and calling it an “upgrade” (not sure for who), it’s pretty obvious having doubts (concerns?) about it. And even if in 2 hours we get double the points we usually get in a day… we have no idea if by tomorrow or a month they’ll change it without saying anything. So yeah, I wouldn’t like it very much anyway. :man_shrugging:

I personally doubt they made this change to pay more or even the same as before though.

Anyone else miss the dopamine hit of refreshing and seeing some points? Even if I earn more, I dont think ill create as much without it :skull:

I am confused, is UTC 22:00+ will become not in 2 hours?)

When did UTC become the standard instead of GMT?

When did UTC become the standard instead of GMT?

I’ll take the other side on this one. It was hard for me to remember which points I’d already seen and which were new. I prefer the idea of seeing a batch arrive daily. I get enough dopamine watching my download counts increase anyway.

I’m for some reason recalling GMT being the reference I’ve always seen.
UTC has been around as long as I know but growing up & even recently I always see GMT+ whatever.

I wonder if it was an American influence, as they prefer things that are focused on them or at least not focused on others.

It is a pet peeve for me as the whole time standards thing was created in Greenwich in London, U.K. GMT means Greenwich Mean Time.

That said, the U.K. is currently observing BST (British Summer Time), which is UTC/GMT+1.

This means 22:00 UTC/GMT is 23:00 BST.

From when you wrote this, yes, it was roughly 2 hours away.

Your clock likely (if my Google search worked) shows 23:52, and UTC 22:00 is in 1 hour 8 minutes.

So, your clock will show 01:00 am when it is 22:00 UTC.

As a 52-year-old, it has always been UTC, yet I know it as GMT.

I suspect it is due to the teachers teaching what they knew. In the same way, I was first educated in feet and inches rather than cm and metres, which came later in my education.

Yes, but for you it should be same in 1 h and now 4 mins)

Yes, we will both experience UTC 22:00 at the same time.

The only difference is my clock will show 23:00 and yours will show 01:00 am.

This is because UTC doesn’t change and all other time zones are hours to or from it.

I understand your point of view, but I don’t fully agree. Yes, complex models have their value, but we can’t forget that simple models have their own place and importance. Forcing the system to reward only complex models would be a discrimination against those who create easy-to-use models that are just as useful or beautiful. Not everyone wants to spend hours designing a complicated model, and we shouldn’t penalize those who create items that are practical for everyday life or simply decorative.
The reality is that each user has their own preferences: some prefer simple models to print, others look for more complex projects to challenge themselves. But in the end, it’s the user who should choose what to print, not the system imposing a certain type of model. If someone wants something practical or decorative, simple models are perfect without necessarily having to resort to a complicated project that might not even be needed. And this doesn’t mean that those choosing simple models are devaluing the platform – on the contrary, they are helping to keep it accessible and diverse.
As for Cyberbrick, yes, it will probably find its success, but we can’t reduce the whole platform to a system that only favors complex projects. Variety is the strength of the community, and rewarding only difficulty does nothing but close the door to those with simple, yet brilliant and useful ideas.
In conclusion, I believe more rules are needed, but we must never forget that the final choice must remain with the user. Every type of project, whether simple or complex, deserves its own space and the opportunity to be appreciated for what it truly is a unique and valuable contribution.

That is why I was confused, because you wrote before “almost 2.5 hours to go”, but for some reason I read as 1h… Probably, it’s time to go sleep)

I know some folk view the site as a job, because it is actually a thing you can put effort into and receive BambuBucks© out of, but like, you might want to look around to how modern content-driven sites enshittify, and it never ends well for the content creators. Once they reach critical mass in their library, they don’t need you anymore, and will make ChatGPT write pages of excuses and reasoning and nice words for why “number go down”.

Here is another side. Just imagine that you are designing models only for money. You have 1 task to create a personalised coaster and another task is to create lets say small car with movable and turning wheels. How will you charge your temporary employees? 100% not equal, because of difficulties and differences between this 2 tasks. And time consuming to create each. Right?)

If we talk about platform rewards, your coasters will be more popular because of easy print and zero assembling = more downloads. In the end, your profit will be the same as with complex work.

So, how to give your job more value, if most of people will choose an easy print instead of your comlex 2 weeks car? The only different rewards can keep balance, right?

i dunnno how you manage because if i download more than 2-3 things in an afternoon the system flags me as a bot and forces me to do a captcha. |:

Me me me me me me me! Me111…!

Oh, sorry, were you saying something not about me? As an American, I only understand me.

Ticktock ;p

Will it delay! though im expecting 0 -15 so i might not know anyway !

I know this was mostly in jest, and that it’s fun to bash Americans, but (especially with computers) there was an actual good reason to switch to UTC. ChatGPT can summarize it better than I can:

The world switched from GMT to UTC because UTC is based on atomic time, making it much more precise and stable than GMT, which relies on Earth’s rotation. UTC can be adjusted with leap seconds to stay in sync with Earth’s rotation, allowing it to serve as the global time standard for science, navigation, and communication.

My points today, 3.75 from the CN site. The download log is no longer visible, so we won’t know when we are scored or under what criteria. Now it only shows a date.

0 points from the Global site.

And in the previous 5 days, approximately 1400 points.
