I used, to the X1C being an appliance and just working.
I have printing a lot of ABS lately and not thinking anything of it.
An overnight print failed last night, before it ever started.
Woke up this morning to a huge blob of orange ABS smooshed all over the bottom of the hot end. It turns out, not exactly on the nozzle. This time, the filament blob when about half an inch up inside the the part cooler (looking from the front) left outlet. It was so bad, it cracked the front cover trying to expand.
I had to use hot air, from my SMT repair station, to melt it enough to get the blob out. I glued the front end piece back together where it was broken. The part cooler opening looks exaggeratively large now, but the hot end is back together and working again without changing the nozzle (been using same nozzle for probably two years).
I am doing a small ABS print now, and it looks like it is turning out well.
This was just weird for me. This printer never breaks! LOL I do have a couple of new front covers ordered to replace this one and have one in stock.
I guess the X1C really isn’t the ideal ABS printed, but it has been printing this stuff well for maybe six months now.
I guess it was just tired and needed a short break and got that break anyway it could.
I have been using only Bambu Labs ABS refill rolls of filament, by the way.
I’ve printed 20-25 rolls of ABS in my X1C without blobbing issues, in fact, I’ve only had 1 blob issue, and it was with TPU. I’ve found the X1C to be in fact ideal to print ABS and ASA with, at least in my experience so far.
Good to hear you’re back up and running, you can probably print your own custom cover, or pick one from makerworld, there are several.
Print failures happen some times, it has nothing to do with the printer’s ability to print ABS, the printer doesn’t care if it’s ABS provided you have it tuned properly.
Sounds to me like your nozzle has failed at the heat break and filament is leaking out above the nozzle opening. Replace the nozzle if so.
Two years old? Mostly ABS? It’s worn out and needs to be replaced anyway…
Not the cover (cover, fan, and ductwork) is like $15 as a spare part. After gluing the break, it is okay. The blob, and me using hot air to get it out, the opening in the part cooling ductwork, is probably 25% bigger than it used to be. Hot ABS melted it. I mean it was really funny to look at - lol. The cooling duct full of ABS. How the ■■■■ did it do that? One anomaly in how many years of using the X1C (had it from the start).
I did look on Maker’s World. I did not find a printable cooling duct for the X1C. Plus I imagine it should be fairly hi-temp plastic?
The next print was perfect. Yaa, that nozzle probably needs replaced. I just think this is a funny anomaly. How the heck did the cooling duct get full of SOLID orange ABS. It did not leak out about the nozzle. Maybe, before the cooling fan kicked in, a string of ABS out of the nozzle made its way in to cooling duct during the nozzle wipe and the reset went in there. I dunno, that was just too weird of a way to start the day. It’s cleaned out with a really big cooling duct opening. New front cover/fan/ducts ordered. Even with the large part cooling opening, the next ABS print looks excellent.
