X1C + Enclosure. Printing Quality and Safety

Thanks! I haven’t gotten around to printing ABS or ASA yet—most of my prints have been PLA for functional stuff around the house. I do have a project in mind that’ll need ABS, just need to find the time.

That said, based on how the enclosure handles PLA, I think it would hold up well for ABS/ASA too—but I can’t speak from direct experience yet, so take that with a grain of salt.

During filament purge (when it dumps into the poop chute), my PM2.5 sensor inside the enclosure sees a short spike, but it clears fully after a few minutes. The external room sensor never picks anything up, which is reassuring.

I’m running the Bento Box with the upgraded VOXELPLA filters, plus an extra filter on the printer’s rear exhaust after the fan. It’s probably overkill, but in a condo with limited space—and a wife and kid around—it helps me sleep at night.

It’s not a cheap setup, but if you’re in a similar situation, I’d definitely recommend it.

What kind of filter do you use on the exhaust after the AC Infinity fan? Is it the MERV filter box they also sell? I was thinking about putting a HEPA filter in line but worried it may reduce flow too much and the ultimate goal is to just evacuate the air. The larger MERV 16 filters seem to be less restrictive on flow and still filter out quite a bit.

Thanks again for posting this - I’ve been obsessing over the safety aspect (have a toddler and another on the way) and this thread is seemingly the only one with a mostly off the shelf solution I don’t have to worry too much about messing up!

Oh I feel you — I’m in the toddler boat as well!

Before I even got started, I obsessed over this setup for about 4 months—reading, researching, trying to make sure I wasn’t overlooking anything, especially with a kid in the house.

For my current setup: I use a 6" AC Infinity fan to exhaust the enclosure to the outside. Inside the chamber, I filter with the Bento Box, but I swapped the stock charcoal-only filter for the upgraded combo Carbon + HEPA filter from VoxelPLA.

Lastly, on the rear fan of the printer itself, I use this printed filter mount:

It’s probably overkill, but with a toddler around, it’s worth the peace of mind!
