I started getting clogs in the extruder a couple weeks ago - lots of clogs.
didn’t change much else, other than started printing with ABS, but I rarely have ABS clogs - usually it’s PLA or PC.

I put in a new hot end. looked like it was gonna be all better for a minute, until I realized it wasn’t extruding at all. It was translating in X and Y and lowering along Z, but not putting out plastic.

I am able to heat the nozzle and push filament in to the top of the tool head by hand, and it comes out the hot end as expected.

The self test gets hung up on two things: cutter lever is stuck, which it is not, and tool head cover has fallen off, which, again, it has not.

I suspect I wore out one or more of the wire connectors that have to be disconnected when pulling the extruder. any advice would be appreciated

Try reseating the connectors as it’s easy to not seat them correctly.

It really sounds like an extruder issue, follow the above, you are going to have to take it apart, I have seen some videos where a little piece of filament causes all sorts of issues until its disassembled and cleaned. The cutter getting stuck is odd but wouldn’t prevent printing as the filament either has to be loaded or already is so I would think that would cause issues at the end of prints, like the AMS getting stuck because the filament didn’t get cut. Luckily only 5 screws hold in the entire toolhead assembly so should be pretty straight forward to inspect using their wiki (from a link on the page linked above)

Barring a faulty sensor, cutter stuck errors happen when the cutter lever does not “release” after being compressed. If it’s in this position, it most definitely will not permit filament to reach the hot end. If it’s truly stuck, you need to unstuck it.

Assuming all the connections are verified to be good, I’d put my bet on a bad extruder stepper motor.

I also bet on the extruder gears having filament stuck or at least some ground plastic.

Actually, after reading this again I would imagine you wouldn’t be able to accomplish this if filament is stuck or was the extruder, especially if you are pushing it through the top because it has to go through the extruder to do so and if it was jammed or had filament stuck in it, I don’t believe this would be possible. If it’s not pulling filament at all, it could be the extruder pancake stepper motor

According to Bambu wiki you support may be able to tell from a log file. Luckily a replacement is cheap, replacing it is a bit more of a headache if that is the issue. If you can heat up the nozzle, push filament from the top all they way through, then I think the chances of it being a clogged extruder are much, much lower if you can do the above, hopefully some wires just came lose but you are going to have to disassemble the toolhead to really find out for sure. Hopefully its just a loose wire.

Have you tried to manually load it not using the AMS? That would be help because it if you can just push filament to the hotend and it comes out it’s not spinning or the extruder isn’t grabbing the filament (something loose somehow). If the extruder isn’t moving (you can watch the yellow wheel, it spins slowly when the extruder turns) when manually extruding filament then it’s one of the two I would imagine probably a motor or wiring issue.
