X2D help please!

Hello All

I took the plunge this week and bought my first printer, the X2D. I was looking forward to creating lots of things for the kids but it has been a bust so far.

I am sure this may be due to my lack of experience but thought I would post here to make sure and maybe get some helpful feedback. Every post on tick-tock I see people unboxing this, put the filament in the Ams and off they go. I am yet to have a successful print, indeed they don’t get past a layer or 2 before a piece of filament still attached to the hot end pulls it up and the process is ruined.

I read online increasing the bed temp may help with adhesion, so I tried that, slowing the speed down, tried that, cleaned the bed in soapy water while wearing gloves so as not to get oily finger prints on there, dying the filaments for 12 hours…. Nothing has worked.

Any advise on where I am going wrong would be greatly appreciated

From your pictures, it seems be a bed adhesion issue. I know you washed your plate with dish soap and water, but did you make sure to get ALL the soap off? I personally use IPA (isopropyl alcohol) to clean my build plate because dish soap is hard to rinse off and the water takes forever to dry. IPA evaporates pretty quickly. I would try wiping down with microfiber cloth and IPA and try again. Hope that helps.

something looks really really really off in pressure advance to be that far from the wall, which probably is not helping matters. Bambu software calls this K-Factor, Flow Dynamics[not flow rate]. Is this off of your main extruder or the aux extruder? What was the measurement the k factor came back as? It should be a small number, 0.0■■ usually, decimal very important

I second the extra clean. Both IPA and dish soap work well and technically work to be a solvent of different contaminants, so give both a try [sequentially] to get to clean state?

That was off the external spool so the secondary one, wanted to try if that would be better but it wasn’t. I have ordered some of the alcohol spray ( should be here tomorrow) and also some 3DLac glue spray, not sure if this is required but I am running out of ideas.

Not sure if it matters but these filaments were not Bambu but another make, SUNLU think, I assumed you could get them from anywhere but I may be wrong .

Dumb questions:
Did you dry your filament?
and what kind of filament are you using?

Bullocks reply was too smart for me to understand, but from what I gather, something wrong with flow? Have you tried recalibrating everything? In the settings menu there’s maintenance which allows your printer to recalibrate. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Do the filament flow dynamics calibrations IMO. The aux nozzle especially needs more “k-factor” than the primary, so running uncalibrated it’s gonna give some poor results.

I try not to share values because my values will never be your values, this is a measurement of the amount of time [measured in seconds] it takes for the system to realize force at the motor gears to pressure at the nozzle mouth. On brand new machines with new componentry and 2 rolls of the same filament it can be assumed to be similar, but…? :slight_smile: Anyways, to ground you to ballpark values, I test this:

Main extruder PLA between 0.024 - 0.031
Those same rolls PLA on the aux extruder between 0.080 - 0.150

so, filament calibration :slight_smile: Or lie to it and tell it its bambu PLA and it’ll apply a best guess that will probably get you closer to true than 0

You can use most any good filament and sunlu is what I use and have no adehesion problems, but you will need to build filament profiles to get the most from aftermarket filaments.

Using IPA you put the IPA on a rag or on the plate and rub it around , all this does is thin the oil until the IPA evaporates, it is important to wipe it of with a clean ragwhile the IPA is still wet, with dish soap the soap breaks the oil free and the Hot water rinses it away. If I were in your shoes Have you tried to print more than one thing?

Yes I dried them both in the AMS for 12 hours overnight. One PLA and the other PLA sulk. I set them up like this on the printer

Yes I did a full recalibration and it didn’t help

Yes i have tried to print the boat, dinosaur and several spiders, non of which get past 2 layers at most

To me it looks like bad bed leveling. This could happen if

(a) there was dirt/filament on the nozzle while probing (rare)

(b) you might have some filament between the heatbed and the print plate. Take off the build plate and check it’s underside and the heatbed for (small) filament / dirt that should not be there.

To troubleshoot I would recommend using the left/main extruder, the regular filament (not silk), and put the “bed leveling” and “dynamic flow” options before print to “on”.

When the nozzle probes the bed, check if the nozzle is clean and actually touches the sheet. Maybe film the first layer with your phone

I’ve never once gotten IPA to work. It seems to make the surface even slicker and parts don’t stick afterward. I always use only dish soap, Rub it in good and rinse it off, pat dry with a paper towel. Works every time.

What works even better? Check out the BIQU Cryogrip plates on Amazon. I don’t understand the magic behind them, but they barely need cleaning and parts stick to it like crazy. And they’re far better than the stock plates that come with these printers, in my opinion.

Double check that you are using an appropriate filament profile since you are using 3rd party filament with no rfid tag it is easy enough to load PLA and try to use a PETG profile or such,

I tried that plate you suggested, cleaned it and still no adhesion , what am I doing wrong ?

Have you tried other filament other than that multicolor and tan? Idk at this point I’m just trying to rule things out. Sometimes certain filaments just suck.

its much easier to diagnose issues with more visual aids.

I suggest you take a video of the first layer being printed.

I don’t believe video’s can be posted here. That said, If anyone knows how, please share.

I know someone has already mentioned this but it is worth a recheck. I was having this exact issue with my X2D and finally realized that I was using ABS instead of PLA but when I defined the filament on the printer as third party PLA, I was getting the same issue you are receiving. After adding PLA to the AMS and correctly defining it as PLA, I haven’t had a problem since.

Just a thought - When you say a “full recalibration”, that sounds like a mechanical calibration. From Bambu Studio, the CENTER of the screen is the calibration you want to use for filament, not the calibration tab on the right side of the screen which is for mechanical calibration..
