X2D : huge difference in print times compared to the elegoo CC1

I finally have some time to use my new X2D that I purchased a couple of weeks ago and I’m noticing that the printing times are often double those of my other closed printer, an Elegoo CC1, of course with the same material, process and model.

For example, with this simple model : PTFE Tube holder X2D , printed with ABS material X2D takes about 26 minutes while CC1 takes 13 minutes … the slicers model printing time are in line with actual printing jobs, which I actually did with the two printers.

I spent some time comparing the slicers parameters and I’m not able to find out the reason why X2D it’s so slower than CC1 so I kindly ask for help in understanding what determines this difference.

Am I making some mistake?

Maybe have a look at the flow, speed and layer time previews?

Filament cooling settings (max fan) can cause a further slow down beyond the settings in the speed tab.

It looks like a multi-color print. Print something that’s only one color. My guess is that the elegoo simply does multi-color printing faster. The BL printers aren’t exactly known for their multi-color printing speed.

Filaments max volumetric speed are quite similar : 16 mm3/s for Bambu ABS and 18 mm3/s for Elegoo and if I increase to 18 the value in Bambu ABS profile the printing time remains exactly the same, so it’s not the limiting factor.

It’s a single color print.

Which nozzle of the x2d are you using?

As you can see in the first screenshot, left nozzle (0.4mm).

oh yeah okay my bad for not noticing that. I thought you might be using the auxiliary nozzle, but as that is not the case, I have no idea. Sorry I can’t help more.

Bambu prep time 17min… explore you are calibrating proboly a lot of things. Centuri stars printing ABS without nothing, I want to see how it comes out… Actual difference is 17 vs 13 min

Thanks for the cooling settings. With these, the Bambu will always slow down to take at least 12s per layer while the CC will only slow down if a layer would take longer than 3s.

It’ll show quite well in the layer time preview.

Try unticking the box for “Slow printing down for better layer cooling” to see how it affects print times. (Note: Don’t print though unless you are confident or willing to risk a failed print or bent nozzle :wink:).

And I would be very surprised if the CC1 really starts printing within 6s after sending the job. Even if it has super fast heating, I doubt that both nozzle and bed are at temperature within 6s.
Then for ABS, the X2D certainly makes use of the chamber heating, vastly improving layer adhesion and reducing warping but also taking extra time.

So it is not at all apples to apples.

Speed comparisons make far more sense with larger objects in my opinion.

I have a bunch of cc1 as well, the settings are only the same in name, not in content. This is kinda common though, not just a elegoo vs Bambu. Just how the slicer is, one big ball of settings.

This is a very small object so minimum layer time cooling is probably the major constraint for overall speed

Not 6 seconds but a couple of minutes, but again, this time interval is aside the printing time.

To put it simple, the total time interval computed from the instant you press print button on the slicer and when the object is ready is :

X2D : 44 minutes

C1C : 15 minutes

but we are talking about the printing phase only that is about :

X2D : 26 minutes

CC1 : 13 minutes

You nailed it,

lowering the Layer time to 3 seconds in ”Max fan speed threshold” the slicers reported a printing time of 13m50s (from 26m), while trying to disable “Slowing printing down for better layer cooling” dropped further to 8m50s, so the mystery is solved.

Considering that I’m actually using Elegoo ABS filament, Is it safe to lower the Layer time to 3 seconds on X2D printer ? (leaving “Slowing printing down for better layer cooling” enabled)

Great feedback and solution, giving me something else to keep an eye on.

To be honest: I really do not know. With different printers, different fans, it could lead to a build up of heat in the part.
But if you watch the print as it happens, you could give it a try.

Understood, just wanted to point out that looking away from the model printing time, probably the preparation time is not true in the CC1. That hasn’t been mentioned so far.

Interesting conversation, thanks. I have just moved from a K1C to the X2D and am certainly new to having an AMS.

The X2D seems to purge a lot of filament with a color change. Not only down the chute, but also on the Prime tower which not only seems to be big, but a lot of filament is printed there on a color change. Are these things able to be changed in the settings somewhere?
