Z binding symptoms and rough surfaces

So I’ll try my best to describe my issue in extensive details. Apologies if I miss anything. The gist is, random layer bulging, and rough textures.

I’ve been trying to print pieces to this design I’ve made, and I keep running into instances of random layer bulges, as well as rough surfaces.

Steps I’ve tried to rectify are:
Cleaning all rods, smooth and threaded.
Greasing all rods except the carbon rods
Re tensioning on rear of printer (not z on bottom)
Clearing any debris I could find
Auto calibrating after all steps

It rather oddly seems most apparent on the primary model I’m working on, but shows very slightly on others.

Unfortunately I’ve tossed a couple pieces already. But I still have enough to show the issue.

This first 2 pictures are of a basic rounded hollow cube hat showed signs of rough surface, and a very slight bulging in a random spot.


The next showcase the other model I’ve been trying to print that I’ve made myself.





Here’s an stl Download of one of the components that’s producing the issues. I do realize that in a couple instances, the bulge happens around a point where the layer goes from solid completely, to having the indents for the screw holes.

Additionally, I remembered, similar random occurrences where this curve buildup is messy. But has been clean a couple times with no noticeable settings changes.

Best way id describe all of it is z binding. Symptoms of the z getting stuck somewhere, but upon inspection everywhere, nothing seems wrong. But I may have missed something.

You may be able to improve the radiused edges by lowering your layer height. Another option is to replace them with chamfers.

I considered the chamfer part. However I’m sure it’s a related issue as they have printed good at least a couple times.

Have you:

  • dried the filament
  • calibrated that particular spool of filament

Yes and yes. Forgot to mention that as well. Some smaller objects I’ve been able to print completely fine. I guess I forgot to clarify, this is a whole bed project for the most part.

I am travelling this week so I am not able to look at your file in a slicer. You may have a temperature problem. I have noticed issues when printing near the edge of the print bed. People have reported cool spots on their print beds. You may want to play with some of the print speed and cooling fan settings also.

All good I appreciate the feedback. One thing that I took into consideration with that, was the adhesion, because I did have lifting previously, but even with a new bed, the biqu cryogrip, and everything sticks perfectly to that. And it’s considered a cool plate. 35c for that so I don’t think it’s a temp issue either.

You can also try to reattach the hot end to ensure the two mounting screws of hot end are not loose. You’ll need to recalibration it after reattach the hot end.
