"Z Overrides X/Y" should not be enabled by default

The new option in supports called “Z Overrides X/Y” either should not be enabled by default or should be disabled when using support material only on the interfaces. The reason is that the X/Y distance is 0 (because the Z distance is 0) and the support base fuses with the body of the print and becomes impossible to remove.

I understand the need for this when using the support material for both the support base and the interface but “Z Overrides X/Y” should not be turned on when using the support material only for the interfaces.

Came here to post this. I use PETG as a support for PLA and it has ruined every print. This setting has ruined about 5 prints of mine (approximately 38 hours of printing time) because it is now a default.

I believe this was corrected in Studio 2.3.1.51. At least, it is not enabled by default for the X1C in my Windows version.

So, I just discovered something. You are both correct and incorrect.

On a new file, if I add a PETG support interface it does not auto-enable

However, with an existing file it will auto-enable when adding a PETG interface.

Yes! I’m happy that I found this post because I often use snug supports in my models for small slots and overhangs, and they always have fused to the model, because I had not noticed the z overrides x/y box was checked. Not anymore. :slight_smile:

I wonder if it can be considered a software defect that it places those support “trunks” so needlessly close when its a straight vertical wall not requiring any active help. Even with a nonbinding filament it just seems… not right? I get it for when there is any % overhang, but when there isnt? Maybe tree supports have warped my fragile little mind

As stated by OP, it simply should not be checked by default. Then, the user can decide how close to get to the model in x/y. I can’t remember how many big prints I’ve done that were marred or ruined by this setting. (I actually made a narrow chisel to get a slot cleaned out on one print.)

I’ve already greatly improved how easy supports come off on a current model that I’m working on by simply unchecking that box. (I’m using PLA as a PETG support interface.)

So, I’ve decided to redo an older model to test this some more, and I noticed this dialogue box pop-up that says to set top z to 0, then to check the z overrides x/y box (when using support material). That’s an obvious mistake IMO.


This much bigger model has a small 5x3mm slot inside around 3 sides, about 650mm length total. There’s no way to use trees, so I’ve always used snug supports in this slot. It used to take me an hour or more to clean out the support stuck to the model in there and looked awful when done. So, I’ve just sliced a little 70mm test piece and printed it with the new setting. I took me about 5 seconds to pull the support and interface filament out and it looks great. Nice.

Is it actually enabled by default?

I’ve always had to activate it manually. When did they decide to make it the default setting?

As a test, I just made a new project using just primitives with a similar small slot as my old project. Like before, I set petg as the model filament and pla as the support interface and snug as the support type. In this case the “z overrides x/y” box is not checked by default, so yes, it seems that perhaps only old models get the box checked.
