3D Printing in Orwell's 1984

I’m never sure which topic area to post in. Forgive me if this shouldn’t be in Maker World.

It may have already been discussed to death, but the violation of my privacy to look for and control my designs looking for a gun really chaps me. I’m thinking we should all design and print something gun-like each and every day to keep them busy.

Never gonna stop me.

Even if I have to boot up my old enders.

Love it!

More characters.

To be honest I doubt they will ever actually scan for guns. They will happily take the opportunity to force you to upload your models though and scan through it for anything of value. I could almost… almost accept one’s local government having this access if and only if it was only accessed by the approved agency and could not be used in any way beyond the stated intention. Kind of like a warrant, I guess. Not really though - because this is a scam being pushed by people who think they can profit off of it somehow. It is like the ID scams. That one I really could accept - you want to know if I am old enough send me to the local government website and in turn receive a key or something that verifies my age. But no, instead we have to start giving away the last bit of our personal information to Elon, Musk and Jeff and all the rest of the guys who already have most of the money in the world.

Rant rant mumble mumble. Sigh.

I understand you’re willing to allow access with a warrant backed up with probable cause to investigate a crime. That’s not what they want. They want to be able to decide– on their own– whether I’m printing something they don’t approve of. As to the money bit, call me naive, but I don’t think there’s any desire to make money with this control, they just want control for control sake. If my print of a proposed subdivision with a pool resembles a 45 auto, they want the power to block my printer.

I avoid politics on this forum, but there’s one party who will get behind anything that has to do with more and more control over my life.

I’m not sure what Elon Musk has to do with any of this. I’d say absolutely nothing. He’s become something of a whipping boy for any number of things that he has nothing to do with.

You have to realize there are 194 other countries in the world, and each has its own rules not just a political party in one country. I don’t really care about the issue but lets not forget the complexities at play here, not just local.

I don’t get your point.

Maybe we need an “America” tag for topics like this.

But still also good to point out that similar policies have been proposed in the EU.

That was the point, it’s not just one country or one party in any particular country that may or may not want to “look” or “ban” anything. All my stuff was lost in a boating accident anyway . Im with the OPs original joke, just we’re not alone and this is only one subject in a big bucket of things various places want to get in the middle of.

“I don’t really care about the issue…”

Maybe you will when you get a banner across your monitor that says “This print violates our policies and will be discarded!”

This is just my theory.

It is never going to go that far (at least in the united states).

There are too many people that would fight against it. Maybe in California or New York something may happen, but I feel no threat from it being in a historically red state.

Honestly, I want to see them do it so I can call their bluff.

Bambu could barely afford their AWS cloud bills just from people using their printer’s cloud SFTP service, they’d be out of business tomorrow if they had to pay compute on every file, being filtered thru an AI gcode analyzer or whatever.

I personally categorize this type of thing as a distraction from bigger issues and FUD. I don’t believe it will ever happen (the particular object being banned in question). The real threat is IP violations and soon as any company with deep pockets starts losing out to any tech they will do whatever they can to stop it - we’ve seen take downs over and over because of it.
Let me ask because I am genuinely curious. Has anyone banned this in the more restrictive areas of the world (What you say, a pop up stopping a print)? I could see certain symbology being banned say the colors for a certain island before anyone in PRC gives a hoot about attachments, mods, and on and on for this category. It’s all about the money, always about the money.

I’m not sure what you’re asking. I guess you’re asking if anyone has seen the blocking of certain files (like a gun part for example) so that the print could not proceed. As far as I know, such blocking AI has not yet been deployed. So why would I think it might? Well… I’m just taking their word for it.

Some people can see conspiracy theories for what they are. Apparently others can not.

Well, I guess you’re talking about me, the OP. It’s not a conspiracy theory. They are actual laws that are already in place or… headed for approval. It’s in the news. I didn’t make this shid up.

Is AP good enough for you? Here’s a link:

Tell us what you are without telling us what you are.

Guns are the leading cause of death for children across the US. Yet there are those who care more about the guns than the children.

That is not what this topic is about.

Lets use a quote from Louis Rossman since I think he explained in a great way

Well, what does that apply to? Are we talking about a build that deals with 3D printers, or are we talking about manufacturing as a whole?

And I’m not saying that people who are for or against gun control are [ __ ]

I’m saying that this is not a gun control bill. This is a manufacturing control bill. So the moment that you start arguing back and forth on whether gun control is good or bad, whether this is a good form of gun control, you are now having the wrong argument. You have essentially conceded that to your adversary that this is a gun control bill when it is not. This is a manufacturing control bill.

Let’s talk about everything that we could consider covered under their definition of the law.

We’re not talking about that. We are talking about resin printers like what you find in dentistry and jewelry. Industrial metal printers like what you see in automotive and aerospace. biop printers, commercial food printers, large scale concrete construction printers, CNC lathes, CNC mills and routers, laser cutters and engravers, CNC plasma and water jet cutters. That’s a [ __ ] ton more than just a bamboo labs

Not so fun facts

Using the same study from what you quoted. Crude rate per 100k is the most accurate measurement to get an understanding of it.

Black / African Americans Age 12 through 18

White (Ages 12 through 18)

Weird…

Maybe there are some other factors at play

I live in one of those places that certain pundits like to pretend is one of the worst places on earth. Yet when I look out my window, or take a walk around the neighborhood, natural beauty is to be seen in every direction. I awake every morning to the sounds of birds singing in the trees. When I compare demographics I find that where I live has one of lowest crime rates in the country. Which is not surprising seeing how friendly the people tend to be, regardless of ethnicity. And one of the best educated. The local school district is one of the highest rated in the country. The people living in my neck of the woods tend to live as much as 20 years longer than those living elsewhere. As to freedom, I can do with impunity in my home and in my backyard, what elsewhere would get me ten years in the penal system, or worse.

So, when I hear those pundits go on about how horrible it is where I live, I know that they are not being truthful. As such, there is nothing they can say that is not suspect. It just baffles my mind that there are those who see the likes of Louis Rossman and not see him for what he is. In the tale of the boy who cried wolf, in the end, the wolf eats the boy and his sheep. In the tale of Chicken Little, in the end, the foxes eat the chickens.

I am not sure what point you are trying to make.

I dont like Louis Rossman much either, but even the dumbest people get things right sometimes.

As much as I can empathize with you on the topic, I think a better approach is needed. In other words, why attempt to do battle with AI bots (especially ones that are heavy on the “A” and pretty light on the “I”)? I don’t think we can win that battle.

What we can do is hold our politicians feet to the fire and make them accountable for the stupidity of their decisions. Using California as an example, I think their intentions are good… but the logic behind how they think they can regulate it is completely out of touch with reality. So whenever a politician says they support a proposal like that, launch your own little political battle with them. And if your local politicians haven’t made a stand, push them to clarify their position. Don’t give them the ability to hide behind non-disclosure. They understand money, and they understand votes. Anything you can do to tank their ability to glean either or both of those things will be a step to helping them get their head screwed on tight.
