.6mm help because im a dumb dumb

I have only ever printed with .4 regular and hardened nozzles. I have a model id like to print that doesnt need much detail so i figured id try the .6 nozzle.

I figured I just change the nozzle on the printer and then change the nozzle size in bambu studio and everything would be a-ok…apparently i am mistaken.

Slicing the model with the .4 nozzle/.20 standard profile with some minor changes to surface pattern and infill leads to a 3 hr 56 min print time. Slicing with the .6 nozzle/.3 standard profile with the same changes leads to a print time of 6 hr 45 min.

Both on a slightly modified Generic PETG profile (because im using a carbon fiber plate)

Am I supposed to change other things? Obviously Im doing SOMETHING wrong, I just have no idea what it might be.

I quickly compared and it looks like the original had 2 walls and the 0.6mm has 4, also the original had infill of 15% and the 0.6mm has 25%.

You can likely reduce these back to the original 2 walls and 15% infill percent to get a lower time, though there is something else to consider:

If the 0.4mm version was already hitting the max volumetric flow of the filament then 0.6mm won’t improve the time to print. You will generally see more improvement when using a high speed filament like PLA or PETG-HF.

I checked and it seems this is the case:

Since the 0.4mm version was already capping the 8mm^3/s volumetric flow max the 0.6mm won’t improve it much if at all.

Though that does make me wonder why there is no improvement from the simple fact that there are many less layers.

So what I’m hearing is I both can’t read (missed the fact the parameters are in fact different) AND it’s kinda weird the amount of layers doesn’t change the print time…

Let me qualify this by saying that I also just bought a 0.6mm, and after realizing there’s a bit more to it than “swap nozzle, print time go down,” had to table the switch temporarily until I have some time to dig into it.

Besides apparently your walls and infill going up, one thing I came across repeatedly is that your line widths should be adjusted, since optimal line width is a percentage of the nozzle diameter. I would do some searching and see if you can find a few articles on sizing up your nozzle and even better if they’re specific to Bambu/Orca slicer (and then if you find some good ones, tell me where they are :laughing:)

At this rate, I’ll spend more time trying to figure out how to save time with a larger nozzle than the amount of extra time it takes to print with a .4 nozzle.

I feel like that didn’t come out right, but I’m too tired to figure that out too…
