A method to label prints: Fused Silver Silk PLA labels

I just discovered a method to label prints: When I printed a case in Sunlu PETG-CF, I overlooked that there was a small rest of Sunlu Silver Silk PLA on the plate from a previous print. I fused nicely (or horribly, if you consider the lost print) with the print. Step 1: Print text mirror-inverted with 0.2mm nozzle and Silver Silk PLA. Step 2: Print object with 0.4mm nozzle and black PETG over it. The plate was sprayed with 3DLAC before the PETG print, in case that matters.

Beside of the nozzle swap, I don’t see any benefit (for AMS users) instead of doing a regular labeling in Bambu studio. Did I miss something of your post?

Additional hint: Your method will only work if the pre-printed part is not recognized by any sensor, incl. the auto-bed-leveling.

I just tried to intentionally replicate the process. This is how it looks like:

A 3.5mm Arial font can be printed just fine with the 0.2mm nozzle (not with the 0.4mm nozzle). Slighly smaller might work, too. The printed example has 2 wall loops in the x-y layer (Arachne). The 'initial layer’s height, the only layer, was set to 0.08mm. Print speed was 16mm/s. The readability of the silver filament within the textured, glossy front depends very much on how the ambient light falls on it. It can be quite nice, as shown, or hardly visible (dim grey). A matte white might offer better readability but I have none. Could you show an example of labeling with AMS?

This is what it looks like if you just make it part of the model. I always offset the part I’m going to color .002 from the rest of the model, and then paint it in Bambu Studio.

I think what dtmr is trying to get at is that you can prepare some plates with extra-fine lettering with a .2 nozzle, in a very specific plate location… and then take that plate and do a largely vanilla-setting print in order to “silkscreen” the fine lettering on.
