A1 Filament change durring print

Hi all:
I have a request for a software update for the A1 with AMS light.
Last night I was running prints. I have an order for 300 items and I noticed that during the printing that one of my spools was almost empty. So I paused the print and looked under the filament settings. All the buttons are in active. I could not exchange spools. The filament was still loaded into the extruder and I couldn’t pull it out. So I thought alright, I guess when the filament runs out I can load the other roll. Well that’s until the bent piece at the end of the filament broke off in the filament sensor. It was to far down to reach with tweezers but I still tried to retrieve the offending piece to no avail.
This meant I had to stop the print and throw the entire batch of prints out. If there was a way during a pause that you could initiated a unload filament this issue would have totally been averted.
I seems like it wouldn’t be hard to add a pause and change spool function. Keeping the print bed hot and allowing for quick exchange of an almost exhausted roll.
Thanks

Dans les paramètres, il me semble qu’il y a possibilité de définir une bobine de remplacement en cas de bobine vide.

FYI a replacement (backup) spool has to be the same type and colour as the spool you are backing up.

Just a thought… are you by any chance running the latest firmware yet for the A1 ( 01.04.00.00)? As there is mention in the release notes for it of being able to edit filament settings during a print… thus you could swap an unused reel for either the same filament (or manually fudge the setting) so that the automatic backup option kicks in.

Although, that still won’t help your scenario, where you want to basically have full manual control of load/unload during a print where necessary (which I wouldn’t mind either after fighting with the AMS Lite and some filament that kept breaking off in the print head - thankfully I was just trying to start a print job, so when I resorted to manual power cycles to try to convince it to behave I didn’t lose any work.

So to reply, it was the exact same filament I wanted to load. But since I paused it the filament was still in the extruder and I couldn’t pull it out. That’s where the unload would have made me not have to scrap an entire plate of half finished parts. I guess what I should have done is wait for the color change and then swapped the spool. But I wasn’t sure I had enough filament to make it.
pfeerick: Exactly, I think this was an oversight when using the AMS lite. I can see a ton of scenarios where this would be a handy feature. For example a roll of filament that has a tangle in the middle. or dimensional issues. to name a few.
Thanks for the replys

TBH I don’t know about with ams (don’t have it), but with external spool you can pause the print and unload/load filament from the printer screen without issue. Or if it runs out as well. With 1.04 firmware on A1.
