A1 mini: how to change plate type? Why do I get lines on smooth plate?

I bought some holo plates which are smooth, but I can’t seem to find any settings on the printer for changing plate type. I tried to print through app which failed, probably due to plate. I was able to print successfully by opening the slicer and choosing the smooth high temp plate type.

1/ But where is this setting on the printer? If it doesn’t exist, does it remember the last type that I set in the slicer, ie if I print from the app now will it assume I have a smooth plate?
Edit: nevermind the first question! I’m blind and it can be set in the handy app, which negates the need to set it directly on the printer.

2/ while I did get the holo pattern to appear, I also got some very distinct streak marks. This is with the smooth plate settings. Is this normal? If not, what does it indicate, ie what settings do I need to change? See attached photo. I also included photo of the same print with textured plate for reference.

3/ any tips and tricks for printing on holo plates? The holo pattern wasn’t as distinct as I expected, but I’m not sure it’s it’s because of my choice of filament color or because of the issue as per question 2, or if this is simply as strong as the pattern is supposed to imprint.

I’m using the same filament profile as I normally use, ie Bambu basic PLA.

You can see the streaks here

This is the same one, but from this angle you can see that the holo pattern did transfer

This is using the standard textured plate

Have not yet tried the Holo surfaces but I assume it behaves like smooth PEI coated plate. Plate type is set in Slicer as far as I know. This information is stored inside the 3MF file and there is no way to setup a custom offset (like on Prusa MK3 for instance). You have to set it in slicer before slicing. It affects not only the offset of first layer but also the temperature of the heat bed.

So I can’t print from the app with any other plate type? Seems like a silly oversight. Now that the last thing I printed was using the smooth plate, will that affect anything when using the app or will the app always assume that I have a textured plate?

You can change the plate type in the Bambu Handy app.

When you go to print, you are shown your printer and the plate type side-by-side.

If you have more than one printer, you change the printer there.

If you have chosen a different plate for the printer, you can change it there.

Ah ■■■■, I’m blind. It’s a massive option. I must have just ignored that whole section as part of the “select printer” section. Nevermind the first silly question then! I’m still interested in the second question though.

Sorry, I do not have any experience with the holo plates, are they Bambu Lab parts or third-party ones?

Given the textured plate worked well with the print, the issue is plate-related.

It could be that the plate requires a decent cleaning before use. Soap and warm water with a decent rinse and better drying off.

Then, try a single-layer test print, this is all too often forgotten as a debug and calibration test.

Mine is as good as anyone else’s. Run a test and see the results, if the first layer fails, it isn’t your model, it is plate-specific. Perform the clean and test the first layer again, is there any improvement? If not, try a different setting for the plate.

Is the smooth setting even the correct one?

Oh, have not noticed this option also. :man_facepalming: Thanks. :+1:
