I bought a second hsnd A1 Mini without an AMS, very cheaply and the A1 Mini is working perfectly.
I watched a You Tube video that used 2 colours on the A1 Mini, that used a pause in mid print to change the colour filament. Maybe a good solution with no AMS.
PLA being a Thermoplastic, is there any problem, printing on existing cold PLA.
It is a solution, If you are patient and watching you print to manually change the filament. All though I have never tried it, since I have an AMS lite and it does it automaticlly. The filament should get cold since the build plate heater is still on while you unload and reload the filament. But if you plan to do a lot of multi-color printing, I suggest getting an AMS.
Also doing this process saves loads of filament from becoming un-usable filament purge poop, so to me it seems only advantages if you change filaments quickly and PLA does not get too cold. Its a real money, and time saver, as purging takes loads of time, and AMS lite on its own not in bundle pretty expensive.
You can add a pause or in the slicer and the printer will pause automatically (I believe it will even make a noise and alert you with the app), just slide the preview slider to the right layer, right click and add pause. I believe this also works for non-AMS setups
The AMS Lite has all it’s spools out in the damp room air so if you do get an AMS I suggest giving the AMS Lite a swerve and get the AMS2 Pro. It will be compatible with A series in Q3 2025 (i.e. anytime now),
I do this all the time. I wish I’d bought an AMS but have made do. I don’t do any complex colour prints may be just add some differtent colour text to a print.
It’s a bit of a PITA but…
Work out where you want to change colour, pause the print, change the filament. hit resume. Never yet had an issue even when it’s taken me an hour to get back to the print
