I have a A1 mini that recently – without a firmware change – started going too far up the z-axis. It goes so far that it forces off the cap on the top and stops just shy of going off the actual rails. I’ve cleaned everything and checked the g-code, but I can’t find anything that would cause this. It homes just fine. It seems to only happen when the print before was tall enough that it moves to the top afterwards (~9cm tall print).
It does the “2 cm rise” command it does when it starts homing without heeding the fact that it’s at the top.
Any ideas what I should do?
It looks like a defective circuit board. Usually, the printer monitors the motors. If something gets jammed, either the motors or the circuit board should detect it and stop immediately.
Firstly, I would perform a factory reset. Completely reset the printer. Then calibrate it when you turn it on. Finally, manually move the axes. If it hits the cap during manual operation and doesn’t stop, then something fundamental is wrong.
It’s important, though, that the cap is securely fastened with the screw. What surprises me a bit when you say the cap pops off is: Did you modify the cap, or is the screw missing? How is the cap supposed to pop off if the screw is stuck tight in there?
Maybe it’s not a faulty circuit board after all, but simply that the screw is missing or something has been modified. Maybe upload a photo of the cap.

It forced the cap off of even with the screw. It broke part of the cap, where the screw sits. I’ll see if I can uppload pictures
If the screw has broken off, I would contact support right away - you’ll need photos anyway. Something is definitely faulty. The axis should stop automatically. That’s exactly what the screw and cap are for. The control board detects that the motor is drawing too much current and shuts down the axle - but that didn’t happen.
I would definitely contact customer support and ask them to send you replacement parts for free.
I’m in talks with the support! Sadly the hot end started getting an error when they asked me to check something (open circuit) so there’s a lot of issues going on right now… But it indeed seems to be something fundamentally wrong at least! Thank you
