ABS and ASA small clumps

Im getting smal clumps when printing ABS and ASA. Ive not tried other high temp fillaments, so it may be a genereal high temp issue.

What Ive tried:

  • Newest public FW
  • All calibrations redone after FW update (even vision plate)
  • Fully dried fillaments in the AMS HT.
  • All calibrations per print.
  • Default Bambu profiles, also tried lowering both initial and other layers by 10C on both Standard and High Flow profiles.

I use HF nozzle and the left one where I print form AMS HT.
The picture is from ASA, ABS is even worse .

The texture plate has a -0.02 Z offset, which works well for PLA, but some other filaments may not respond as well to this setting.

You can tune the first layer by adjusting the line width (0.5), layer height, initial layer flow rate, or by applying a Z-offset.

.

I have the same exact problem with ABS. I noticed it’s only on the initial layers and possibly an issue with uneven bed heating.

I don’t use a Textured PEI plate—only Smooth PEI. I ran two first layer tests and saw no clumps. However, since my filament wasn’t calibrated, there was a small defect in one corner. This disappeared after calibration.

It’s possible that the issue you encountered is related to the combination of HT filament and a Textured PEI surface.

Is this basic ABS or ABS-GF and brand ?

If your offset, flow rates, nozzle temperature, or fan settings aren’t properly calibrated, the filament may clump or form into balls.

I haven’t used this type of filament on the H2D yet, but on my other printer, I use a smooth plate with a Z offset of 0.01 for basic ASA and 0.04 for ASA-CF. If you’re using a textured plate, you might want to try offsets of 0.00 and see what happens you want that first layer to be perfect.

The texture plate has a negative offset of -0.02 to fill in all the voids, but this may not work well with certain filaments.

You can try adjusting the Z offset in the filament settings, or you may need to further refine your settings.

G29.1 Z{0.00} ; Z offset fine tune in 0.01 steps up

FYI Bambo labs smooth pei plate has 0.00 setting.

Was getting similar but on ASA only and only on my 2nd roll of it.

Ran the 2nd roll through a couple of 8 hour drying cycles in the AMS 2 and it would print ok next time and then go back to that gunk.

Tried drying the 3rd roll of ASA in my AMS HT when it arrived last week and that again produced good quality prints for the next one prior to a little bit of that clumping again - although not as bad.

1st layer is always good.

I’ve printed nearly a whole roll of black ABS, used some red, green and orange with no issues until a 2 colour ABS print last night where there is an outer shell of one colour printed around a box of the other, lots of layer line issues(moisture issue) although this was on me as I didn’t dry the inner layer roll 1st.

ASA, have been through 2 and half rolls, 1st roll flawless, 2nd roll lots of aborted prints and the 3rd roll is in the middle. All Bambu ASA, bought at the same time and remaining sealed in the box. Printing the same prints as its filament storage box mods so consistency there too.

Stock 0.4mm nozzle used throughout.

The AMS2 isn’t ideal for drying ASA, as it typically requires either higher temperatures or longer drying times to be effective.

Are you using Bambu filament? I was using eSun ABS+ 220-260C where most profiles use 240-280C.
Worth a check.

I’m using Bambu filament for all types

Got the HT now, not had the issue since.

Good to hear. One thing to keep in mind regarding the AMS HT is its limited internal volume.

When placed on top of the printer, it can heat up significantly during operation. If you’re using a low-temperature filament, it may soften and cause jams in the PTFE tube, buffer, or extruder.

Before starting a print, check the internal temperature and ensure it’s suitable for the filament you’re using.

I did try starting a print straight after drying ABS with the HT and it told me it was too hot.

So it’s coded in and whilst I haven’t tested it I’ll be surprised if when using BL filament it doesn’t vary rue ‘safe’ temp depending on filament loaded.

Not seeing much temp difference between AMS 2 and the HT on top of the printer for me in use (got a hygrometer/temp in it) with ambient room temps above 30 Deg C.

My AMS HT reached approximately 40 °C internally after a 60-hour ASA print.

After that, I cleaned the build plate and started a PETG-HF print using Support for PLA/PETG loaded in the AMS HT. The chamber temperature was 30 °C when the print started. It initially loaded, but the filament got stuck and couldn’t even be unloaded—most likely due to the elevated internal temperature.

I’ve repeated this behavior and can confirm with 100% certainty that the issue is caused by heat buildup in the AMS HT when it’s placed on top of the printer. After relocating it away from the printer, the problem never occurred again.

When using filaments with high viscosity (eg petg…), please change the fill pattern.
Use a pattern that is not crossed and no overhang.
