I print mainly just PLA as a hobbyist. I have another manufacturers printer that I use for the odd bit of PETG that I may print here and there - although not very often!
Rather than the manual loading of the left nozzle, I’m considering a second AMS 2 Pro unit. This will give me an AMS on each nozzle.
My idea is to keep my darker colours on one nozzle, and lighter on the other, so just go by the recommended colours on each side as suggested when slicing - not only should this save from the larger purges between two drastically different colours, but also make general usage easier - I find dropping a spool into the required side much easer then leaning across the desk to manually feed a spool in…
I’d rarely print using 8 colours, but just having them loaded and ready would be handy, and just easier in my mind!
Anyone else have this kind of setup, and how doe sit work for you?
Any issues?
Great setup, make sure you get a power adapter though. I run something similar with support filaments and regular in the other. Makes it really convenient not having to manually load anything.
i ran with ams 1 and ams 2 for all of a day before i sent the ams 1 back to my p1s. had the same thought as you with light and dark, also tried loading primary and secondary color palettes but ultimately i’ve found that the ht and ams 2 or just using the external spool holder has been sufficient for everything i do at least, which is ABS/TPU/PLA/PETG prints white/black/grey then accent colors usually no more than 3 colors total. token YMMV. if it saves you loading and faffing about with filament it’s probably worth it
Does it need a power adapter?
I’m not intending to use the drying element of it for PLA - never had to dry before and always been ok. Instead I printed some desiccant buckets that fit into the front gaps of the unit, and they seem to do quite well for me in maintaining the internal humidity.
From my understanding the second AMS would daisy chain off of the first - and get basic power for functionality through this, with the power adapter only required for the second AMS if the drying function is to be used, since the printer can only power one AMS for drying…?
Yep, if you don’t intend on drying then there’s no need and power will be supplied through the daisy chain. You can find the adapters on amazon for dirt cheap, any 24V 5A should do the trick. Won’t hurt to get one, but you can always get it in the future if you end up needing it too.
i like the desiccant spools. fits into my workflow nicely using the HT and even storing it in the ams to help pull moisture out of ams 1 desiccant and also whatever filament is loaded
