AMS# Assist Motor Overload Error

Hi there, today I have had several “AMS# Assist Motor Overload Error” on slot 4, the AMS is almost new, max 30 hours of printing, probably 3 or 4 on slot 4. The spool was a plastic, esun PLA+ almost empty. How I can solve it ?

If the spool is nearly empty, it can hop around due to how the drive rollers work and the changing angle where the filament leaves the spool. This could cause the filament to overlap and bind or the spool to tip and jam against the sides of the AMS slot. Many users add some form of weight to the center of a light spool. I use a C battery, some use a printed desiccant holder while others report success with a large steel ball.

Yes I think that is the case, I send some other prints and the spool was pulled on his side until the filament get stuck.
I tried to add some weight in a form of tube full with silica gel, but was only 130gr, and didn’t solved the problem.
I have seen users that add 500gr of weight, but I don’t know, looks too much for me.

I don’t think 500g would be a problem. A new spool has 1kg of filament and an empty Overture spool weighs about 156g and the AMS handles it fine.
You should check to make sure the filament isn’t tangled on the spool. Wandering left and right is ok but it has to be free.

I mean 1kg of spool plus the 500gr is not too much ?
The filament was tangled on the left side, because when AMS is pulling the filament, all the spool was pulled on the right and the filament get stuck

I think 1500g total weight would be fine but I don’t think you need that much. A printed desiccant holder that fits in the center weighs maybe 150g when full of desiccant and works for me and many others as does a C cell battery which weighs 70g. I think the weight does a few things. One is simply holding the spool down squarely against the drive rollers. Another is that if the weight is free to move like a battery or ball bearing, it may jostle or very slightly rock the spool which can help disengage the drive gears in the rollers. Sometimes, the gears don’t disengage properly which prevents the spool from spinning free. It only takes a very slight motion to let the gears disengage and the rocking of the weight provide that.

I tried with an almost empty spool with a total of 130gr inside and it was not enough.

Today have had the same error, on slot three.
Almost empty sunlu black roll, that’s the error:

Capture 1

Basically the first filament coil on the left get stuck with the second filament coil because of the diagonal pull

Now there is a weight of 250gr inside, but I don’t think is a weight problem.
I don’t know if play any role but the plastic spool is less wide than the bambu original and also less wide than the esun ones
That’s ridiculous that every 5 minutes i receive this error

No ideas ? there should be a solution somewhere

As soon the spool is totally empty I will take all the measures…

Ok some measures:

Internal spool width: Sunlu 51mm Bambu 77.5mm
Diameter of the spool : Sunlu 61mm Bambu 81mm

I am printing Pastamatic so I will respool all my new spool into the bambulab refillable

Ok pastamatic is ready to work, just one question, how do you hold the filament on the bambu empty spool to have a tight grip for the first coils ? An hole ?

I don’t want a super fix at the beginning because I often use the Auto refill function, so your idea seem very good, do you have any picture ?

Ah ok, but I don’t have any internal bamboo spool, so I have to do the coil directly to the plastic empty spool

Found this one, looks good.

some rolls are to big or to lightweight use some kind of weight

Hi, I printed the pastamatic spooler, and transferred a new PETG roll from a carton to the ams bambu empty spooler but something was wrong i think because is not so nice. I will try tomorrow but to me looks not so good ?
I put a friction on the donor, the pace was not too fast, but I have no idea why at a certain moment all get mess.
Or maybe can functioning…
Any idea ?
