AMS can't load filament

Hello,

I am using the X1 Carbon with AMS. Today, when I wanted to load a different filament through AMS, the AMS moved the filament backward and forward a few times (I could see the filament coming through the PTFE tubes on the back of the AMS a few centimeters before it got retracted again) , then threw a message like “please feed from the spool holder until the tool head filament sensor is triggered”.

I tried again and again but the filament would not move out of the AMS more than a few centimeters and then stopped.

I checked for any stucked PLA inside the AMS, but everything seems to be clear. What I found out, thow: When manually pushing the filament from the spool holder further, I would not do it unless I manually rotated the cogs near the exit of the AMS.

NB: Feeding filament manually (without AMS) works without any issues.

Any ideas what goes wrong?

UPDATE: Ruined it, unfortunately. I unscrewed a few screws neat the stepper motor and two springs and four magnets jumped out. I have no clue how they would be correctly re-arranged … d’oh!

Thanks so much for that. Will try this tomorrow. During my inspection I could not find the tiniest piece of filament that would have caused the underlying issue, though. Maybe it fell out without me noticing.

There is another little “symptom”: When I manually turn the cog, it runs smoothly most of the time except a quarter of once revolution where I can feel some resistance …

Please let us know when you figure it out. This could be very helpful for anyone else that has problems later on.

Check the gears for damage.

Absolutely! I do hope I find something!

The two ones next to the motor look flawless. It might be nothing. When I turn the cog slowly, there is no friction whatsoever. Just when I spin it fast, there comes friction. Maybe that’s just because of the inner magnets creating an electric field that opposes the spin, not sure.

Uodate: I have managed to put the magnets back in place (easy if you have some magnet at hand to hold the other magnets in place. Took five minutes). Will test later if anything changed (I have a print going on at the moment.

There is one thing I am not sure of. The part where the four PTFE tubes connect to has a spring mechanism. I do not know what that spring mechansim is good for, but it takes a lot of force to compress the spring. Is that normal?

So I double checked everthing, dismantled everything, put it together, could not find the reason why it does not load anymore. My last test pulled from the spool holder but the whole spool always dropped forward instead of pulling the string. Also when retracting the string, it sounded as if it really had a hard work doing so.

Not sure what’s wrong with it, but I have ran out of ideas at this point.

Hi I had the same problem, it was stucked spring. Check the buffer spring and slider
