AMS gears and rollers locking up

Hi, I own both AMS (X1C) and AMS Pro (H2D) and BOTH have the same problem.
For some reason, when I start printing after a while, usualy for the first time in the morning or after a few hours at rest, the front rollers where the filament spools are sitting jam’s up or are not in sync with the filament puller gearbox, resulting in the filament being pulled by the gearbox and spool that does not unroll because the roller will not roll and the spool just kick at the top of the cover, and then I get a message that the filament is not loading…
what the heck is this design?
It happens every morning unless i open both lids and give all the filament spools a wiggle to loosen up the rollers then it is ready to go… discouraging for the price it cost and yes all the spools are perfectly inserted and right in the middle of the slots.

I forgot to mention that it happens with Bambu Lab original spools and any other spool i put in. Like I said and just to be more clear… it is the bottom rubber/plastic roller (interconnected in the gearbox) where the spool lies on that jam’s up. Like the gear ratio or tolerance is not good and the vibration of the printer while working creates a gear lock that only a manual wiggle will release it.

I dont know for sure.
But my first guess is the spool, e.g. cardboard, rough walls, a larger size that increases friction, and dont sit adequately.
The spring front rollers sit over hours against the inadequate spool; at cold start, the motor cranks, but the roller doesn’t rotate freely, so the spool kicks against the cover instead of unrolling smoothly.
By opening the cover and wiggling, you break those constraints. Humidity and filament swelling may also have some effect, but I find it harder to happen, unless you have damp filament.
PS: I assume you dont have large temperature gradients within the division where the printer lives.

If the issue happens with a BL default spool (test with more than one), then I would suggest some maintenance and verification of both AMS. And start to imagine what could lead to that effect on both.

That’s quite strange; does it happen in all slots?
Assuming your rollers are clean, your filament and dessica t moisture content are adequate, no mods, and reasoning on physics:

  • When you print, the air temperature within the AMS is warm;
  • During the idle period, the temperature decreases, which can induce a slight negative relative pressure within the AMS, which could hypothetically induce compression over the cover.

But this would require large temperature gradients. It is easy to test, as when it happens in the AMS 2 Pro, you can try to heat the filament and then retry.

These are guesses, and I have never experienced a similar situation with a standard spool size…

hi. it does happen in any slot where there is a filament roll but not all the time. i do not think it is temperature related since it happens a lot in the morning when i fist turn on the printers and everything is cool.
i took a video and i will take a few more then edit it to show soon.

I have been having the same issues on multicolor filaments on an X1C with an AMS 2 pro. When it switches colors the filament locks up and I get an error. I am using a Bambu spool with filament. The AMS has desiccant pods in it and maintains a consistent dry 15% in a controlled environment room. We have 6 other P1S with both AMS and AMS 2 pro attached. I only get this issue on AMS 2 pro units. The lock up is the roller gets stuck and all I have to do is slightly lift up the spool and it releases and goes about its business. It’s really annoying when I have a series of color changes and it locks up on one bay each time. It’s happened at the beginning, middle and end of prints with all the same controlled variables. All OEM parts and generally always running smoothly. It’s happening a lot lately. I had it happening all morning on a print while I was writing up my original flagged response. I also had 3 of 6 printers fans fail at the same time (the print fan).

Same here. My Bambu Lab AMS keeps having the issue mid print. The spool will, on random occasions, become locked up in the AMS and refuse to rotate in the downward direction, causing a failure and stopping the print. However, after rolling the spool slightly up, the spool will be able to rotate downward freely again. This issue happens in every AMS slot, with or without the lid on, with off-brand and Bambu Lab official filament, with off brand plastic/cardboard spools and Bambu Lab official spools.

Yeah, I’m also having this exact issue with my AMS 2 Pro. I would love to hear something got fixed in a Bambu Lab firmware update or something. It’s actually never done it until just a couple weeks ago for me, and now it’s doing it every day, all day on all slots. Not every time, but enough to where, on a multicolor print, I’m getting up about every 1-2 hours to open the lid, jiggle it, and then start it back up.

I’ve been having the same issues. I’ve only used Bambu spools, no cardboard, and the internals of the AMS / AMS 2 are clean.

I find the spools locked up when I open the AMS 2 pro, but everything is operating as normal for me. Maybe the spool needs to be able to slip against the drive roller, and the people having issues have no slippage. Heavy spools and or too much grip between spools and roller. Just an idea???

Upgrade an H2D with with additional AMS Pro, making 4 in total. Both new AMS fail to feed, one most of the time and the other every filament change. After extensive testing, changes of configuration, changing spools, spool weight on working and failing AMS Pro’s. I found its an issue with the feed roller arrangment. Simplifying - pulling the filament presses the spool edge into the front roller as filament is used up the effect worsens (jumping spools) - The angles (traingle) between the outlet, filament on spool and roller change during usage until the spool is pressed past perpendicular into the feed roller = no counter rotation force = stop = jamming.

I am experiencing this issue too. H2 wifh 2 AMS Pro 2s. Tried different kinds of filament. Invariably on a job with color changes, many spools in many slots will get stuck rolling in forward direction and pause the job. I just lift the spool and it seems to top whatever is causing the rollers to spin freely…

It is so frustrating to spend money on the ams only for them to jam. I really can’t recommend it until this issue is resolved.

Bambu Lab has to change the timing in motor motion between the rollers that make the rolls turn and the gear extruder that pushes the filament into the plastic tube.
From what I see, the extruder pushes the filament ( pulling on the roll) but the bottom rollers are not turning in sync, they are jammed and that is why the rolls keep knocking on the top cover.
Very disappointing that they did not think of that.
A simple firmware update would resolve the problem.

Questions;

  1. Does the spool lock only when it is light or heavy?
  2. What type of spool has this issue IE cardboard?
  3. Anyone with the 500g weighted spools adapters having this issue?

I wonder if when the spool retracts, the amount of rotating mass verses the spool to roller friction, causes the spool to slide against the driving roller after the roller stops and results in the filament becoming tight??

Currently dealing with the same issues I tried to leave the lid loosely on to see if that helped and it’s still have issues, has anyone found a fix for it yet?

My theory is that it is slipage between the driving roller and the spool. I am working on a fix, Try adding weight to the spool, or elecrical tape on the edges of the spool if it is cardboard… I believe Bambu is using the AMS lid to limit the amount of spool jumping… So under sized spools would add to the issue.

Just a question. Are any of you using filament clips that are in the two holes in intervals on the edge of the spool?

I lied. I’m wondering because the only time I’ve had this happen between AMS 1 and 2 is when those were on the edge. They get caught in the little slots inside and stop, causing it to either lock up or reverse the spool.

For me the issue happens with any rolls even the Bambu ones and most of the time with 75% empty rolls but I’ve seen it with 50%rolls also. It only happens when the filament is loading into the printer, never on the rewinding to the roll. To reduce the frequency, i remove the ‘’ reads filament on startup’’.
