I have an X1C with 2 AMS hubs. My Primary AMS retracted the filament completely out of the First Stage Filament Feeder on A2. No matter what I did I couldn’t get it to stop unwinding the filament completely out and onto the spool. I took several corrective steps to include:
- Removing all 4 First Stage Feeder Assemblies and throughly cleaning any dust & debris. Reconnected everything and it still completely spits the filament all the way out.
- Replaced the Feeder Funnel only…reconnected everything and same problem.
- Replaced the complete First Stage Feeder Assembly (TWICE), reconnected everything, and it does the same thing…retracts until it spits the filament all the way out of the feeder and onto the roll.
I found someone on Reddit who described the EXACT same issue I was having however they apparently were able to clear it up by just cleaning the dust & debris…this definitely isn’t my problem as my AMS does the same thing with a brand new funnel and a brand new complete feeder assembly. This is the link to their post: Reddit - Dive into anything
If anyone has any ideas or has had similar issues I’m completely open to advice. I have submitted my first ever Trouble Ticket so fingers crossed I get resolution soon.
So did you take apart the AMS internal hub? He said it was caked with dust in all the magnets and springs. I hear they are hard to get back together as i have never done that maintenance on the AMS.

Just so I understand, You’re talking about this part? The AMS hub on the back of the machine?
Sorry, to answer your question no, of all the things I cleaned, that was not one of them.
Or should I be checking this?
Yes! This is the item I was referring to that needed to be cleaned out. There is some videos on youtube that show the teardown of this part.
Sam has a good teardown of this hub. About the one hour mark.

Thanks Barryg41. Got my husband working on that right now…will update if it solves our problem. The magnets are a son of a gun to get back in place after dismantling and cleaning too!!!

UPDATE: After many struggles to get the magnets and tiny springs back in place post cleaning, the filament does NOT completely wind back on to the roll. It rolls back and stops at the appropriate time! Thanks Barryg41 for pointing out that I needed to clean the Internal AMS Filament Hub!

Is the root cause of contamination compressed fiber cardboard filament spools? Like what polymaker uses?
If i have to use cardboard spools i also use the spool adapters. I also keep eight bambu lab refillable split spools. I have never had one to come apart while in the AMS. You have to make sure you get that click when you put the two halves together. I personally use witness marks to make sure they are in the right position.

The issue happened on my husbands AMS and he exclusively uses Bambu Filament. I like to mix and match filament brands but I always transfer filament from cardboard spools to an extra Bambu plastic spool or use a plastic rim protector that I glue on to keep them from coming off. The thing that surprised us was the amount of debris in the First Stage Feeders even though husband only uses Bambu filament. Not sure if it matters, but he does use a lot of Bambu Matte filament.
Forgot to mention that the First Stage Feeders in both of my AMS units are CLEAN. I can only speculate that the Bambu Matte Filament leaves a lot of debris.
Wow! I would have guessed that you bambu lab products and it still clogged up. Maybe someone else will chime in on bambu lab matte filament. I use polymaker only. So far no problems.
I just happy you got your printer running normal again.
