I am trying to paint one of my 3D prints to match the colour of the X1-C frame. I’ts an AMS riser. Just wondering if anyone has successfully done this, and what was their method?
Currently, to get a spray can to be made up, I’m going to have to find a car that has a similar paint job by the factory, then I can have some paint made up by a car/auto shop. That’s a bit of a stretch though, doubt I will find anything suitable.
Instead of looking for a car that matches, take a painted part to an auto body shop or to a wholesale paint shop that supplies body shops. Modern shops have automated scanners that can determine the correct mix. Some can even provide the custom paint in an aerosol can.
This can be quite expensive, so I would first see if generic matte aluminum paint would be close enough. I learned this the hard way when I paid $35 for the “Exact match” touch up pen (1/2 oz.) for my motorcycle, then discovered it was indistinguishable from a $4 rattle can (12 oz.) from the hardware store.
Personally, I’d just make the riser in black, which would go with the smoked glass and black logo on the sides. Or possibly look for a gray filament matching the top button panel.
Yea think I need to do a bit more calling around, tried Bunnings/SuperCheap but they both don’t offer what you mentioned. I assumed at first it was a pretty common thing before I picked out the colours I want
Im keen for the silver/metal look on the main area, makes it look more like an extension of the actual chassy. Draws, buttons and grill will be a charcoal black that is very similar to the logo.
I think I have managed to find a close enough match today, this is just a thin layer on a scrap print, so may look better after more coats. Will share the end results here for anyone stumbling passed looking to do a similar thing.
Used some ‘Dulux Duramax Metallic Finish’. It appears the undercoat affects the tone, so if I was to do it again I would go with maybe a grey undercoat as apposed to white. Then it would probably be spot on. Happy with this though.
