ASA fans chime in, why is ASA so great?

I have my first roll of ASA arriving in the mail tomorrow (Bambu ASA), why is ASA so awesome? Am I going to love it?

First prints will be a dessicant box for the AMS HT and a wall mount for the AMS 2 Pro.

Thanks for the responses!

It’s an engineering plastic, good for making functional parts. Similar mechanical characteristics to ABS. Better UV tolerance. Lower coefficient of thermal expansion (it warps less when you print it).

ASA, Nylon, PETG are my primary filaments. I only use PLA for purely decorative parts or if I need to check something for fit and don’t want to waste more expensive filament only to find out the print isn’t quite right.

What printer are you planning to print this on? Reason I ask is on my X1 I normally heat soak the printer for approximately 30 mins before sending my print off to it. My H2D has the heated chamber so I don’t heat soak it.

As RocketSled said, I use it for functional prints, my last and current use is for printing dust collector hose flanges. They have been holding up for almost a year now and have been dropped a few times with no ill effects. It’s some pretty tuff stuff for it’s cost.

Nice! Yep I’ll be printing on the H2D. After the printer parts I’ll likely finish off the roll with some Govee light brackets for the outside of my house. Will def need something durable and ASA seems to be what I’m looking for.

I have very limited experience with ASA, outside of I tried it, and it didn’t quite work for me (warped and smelled). Been printing consistently with ABS, and I find I get better results. Very well could be one-off due to the brands. Probably Apples and Oranges here, but was using Sunlu ASA, and mostly Polymaker ABS. Also used eSun ABS+ (prints fine, but I don’t like the brittleness), and Eryone (even dried, still stringy and very glossy). I use Eryone currently as my “cheap” ABS.

As of now, I haven’t had a need to try ASA again, but which brands print well? I assume Polymaker and Bambulab would be good?

Printer: H2D

I used to print a lot of ASA, I would buy 50kg at a time. Polymer ASA is usually the best and most warp resistant, Eryone is not bad for a cheap brand I used to buy it for $18 Canadian per KG in bulk. I now have switched to ABS-GF as its has better strength and layer adhesion and its less warp prone. I also find that ABS in general gives off less fumes and smells less.

So your getting many claims this way or that way from experts!
