Bambu Lab R1: a new Ray of making, coming September

Not being contrary, but why would you assume “most people” lack space? I’ve not actually seen that as an issue in pretty much any of my contacts in my circles. We make space for that which we want to utilize in our hobbies and businesses. My guess is this is yet another case of geographical variance. My life and location juxtaposed next to another’s - wherever that may be. This forum is replete with these off-balanced discussion points. Anyway, take care and know there’s much respect directed at you from this particular keyboard.

Just throwing this out there - not as a contradiction, but just something that’s been on my mind:

I think it’s more a question of the target audience than a geographical one. To see this, we just need to look at the A2XL: what was its advertising like, and who was its target audience?

It was aimed at people who want to combine as many functions as possible into a single device. It was aimed at hobbyists who had no prior experience with 3D printing but now wanted to give it a try. Disclaimer: This is not my opinion, but rather how Bambu advertised it. Let’s take a moment to remember that happy advertisement family - from dad to mom to son - who had never had anything to do with 3D printing before and are now fully enjoying their hobby.

Now, with this new device as well, the question will arise as to who the target audience will be? Definitely not people who are short on space, because they’re more likely to buy laser modules for their 3D printers.

What type of 3d printer? Any specific features that you are waiting for?

And when the second model comes out next year with 3D printing they can call it R23D2… Ba Dum Tss…

i rather would love to see a bigger step in fdm printing.. if u look at allt he real idex printers coming i feel like bambu is hanging behind… tehy need to come up with something like the lightmake l4

Are they behind or just not showing their hand… nobody saw the H2C coming, and speculation about a dedicated laser has been there but until today it didn’t exist, I didn’t think it would happen this year.

I would add I have heard rumors of a resin printer and a higher end engineering machine, but nothing is confirmed.

I decided to bite the bullet instead of seeing if BL would compete with an IDEX. I’m in line for a Sovol M1D.

I’m looking forward to this and hope that it uses common parts with the H2 lasers. I have the H2 40W laser and would like to see more laser options, which I think is more likely if the product library in general is bigger and using interchangeable components.

Nice. Curious to see how Bambu innovates in an already saturated market. I like their stuff, and have been looking to buy a large format laser, the timing is great!

Heygears G1 is already on kickstarter, this is a full colour UV resin 3d printer for 4K USD with 430x330x130 build volume. (I’m ordering one as soon as the kickstarters have alpha tested it, and the release model is out).

I think resin goes against Bambu’s ethos of “printer in every home” because of the fumes and chemicals.Then again they said “no more bedslingers” then released the A1 so what do I know? Bambu may have “missed the boat” though if they wanted to first out of the gate with one of those.

BTW Heygears doesn’t mention it, but their machine needs a hood and external ventilation.

EDIT Yikes, I just visited the page to double check the details before posting, and it’s just sitting on a table in a “family room” of some kind.

Yeah resin is a pain.

But the reason that I do not see them getting into it is because it is near maxed out given the current state of technology… until you get into something like that Heygears machine (which doesnt really operate on the same principles as what most of us would refer to as resin printing).

Polyjet is great, but even those are not “easy to use” or “printer in every home”.

I heard rumors they are hiring people from other resin companies, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a new R&D team giving it a crack! With a nice clean workflow and RFID resin cartridges no doubt.

There is a lot of scope for improvement in slicing software and integration, which are strong suites for Bambu so maybe they can do something?

I don’t know of a consumer resin printer that can do automatic calibration or work out how to support a figure better than a professional support engineer can.

Normally I calibrate by printing a special object and then adjusting the exposure time until the lines in the object are correct. There is no reason this can’t be done with a computer vision system except for the fact that the object needs to be cleaned first. But if the user just rinsed the build plate and held it up to a camera on the printer, it could do the job. No printer I know of has this feature.

As for auto supports, the machines don’t know which parts of the models are important to NOT ruin the surface with hundreds of tree branches and can’t work out how to rotate the object to protect those parts or minimze support (Heygears slicer is bad at it, Lychee is the best I have seen but still can’t do it properly).

Youre probably right. I havent owned a resin printer in years, so I am a little outdated.

Purely on the mechanical aspect, MSLA is maxed out. What else are you going to do? We already have 18k screens. Most advancements would probably be around the polymers used.

Polyjet is such a jump from MSLA that you cant consider them in the same tier.

They will be, 99.99 %. The whole philosophy of BL making something and integrating it is what made it so successful.

When I look at the image (wood without scorch marks), the tagline and the name, I am thinking at the very least, it’s a 5w - 10 IR laser module for the H series (hence the R).

It is the next step in the evolution, and a logical one. The “helps you create with more materials” is another clue, because IR can cold cut 3d prints.

Creality has IR and xtool has IR. BL is kinda behind in that respect, and it’s a relatively easy addition to their H lineup:

Find a supplier for IR, stick it in their diode chassis, tweak the settings in studio, done. Question is, does the enclosure have the proper OD to protect the user?

A stand-alone engraver is a must tho, no one wants soot and bad smell in their printer. It’s why I don’t use mine as often as I’d like

My bet would be on a diode laser, but the teaser makes me question that. The teaser suggests it is a laser that operates well at significant focus lengths. This can still be a diode that is just focused for long distance use, but I would guess that detail is a tell. That looks to be a 100-200+mm focus length, putting it in the galvo arena. From the photo, the type of laser would only be a guess, but I think a galvo system gets a higher possibility if the photo can be trusted.

Or… it may mean nothing or not even be an accurate assessment of the device. Who knows. Again, my guess is a conventional diode laser with a lot of power (needed to do such a deep engrave, as teased).
