You make some very good points, and I actually agree with most of them.
Interchangeable diode/IR laser heads already exist, so simply adding swappable modules would not make the R1 revolutionary by itself.
For me, the real question is whether Bambu can do for lasers what it did for 3D printing: remove enough friction from the entire workflow that an average user can get good results without becoming a laser expert.
And I think the three issues you mentioned are exactly where the challenge is.
Fumes are probably the biggest barrier.
A truly consumer-oriented machine needs extraction, filtration and safety to feel like part of the product, not something the user has to engineer afterwards.
Then there is content.
This is where I think Bambu may have a very powerful advantage: MakerWorld.
Imagine downloading one project containing:

-
laser-cut parts
-
engraving data
-
material specifications
-
positioning information
-
tested laser parameters
You select the material, press Make, and the ecosystem handles most of the setup.
And this leads to what I personally find most interesting about the words “personal manufacturing hub.”
Maybe the goal isn’t simply:
3D printing OR laser cutting.
Maybe it’s:
3D printing + laser cutting + engraving + different materials + standard hardware = one finished product.
A designer could combine a printed structural part with laser-cut wood, acrylic, engraved panels, inserts or other materials in the same MakerWorld project.
That would also help solve the problem of laser projects sometimes looking visually repetitive. The laser wouldn’t need to be the entire manufacturing process — it becomes another tool in the workflow.
I also agree about UV. An expensive UV source moving around a large bed on a conventional gantry/CoreXY doesn’t seem like the most logical architecture. If Bambu eventually wants serious UV/fiber-style marking, I would expect a different optical approach or a dedicated marking system.
So after thinking about it, perhaps we’re asking the wrong question when we ask:
“How many watts will the R1 have?”
The much more interesting question might be:
“What ecosystem is Bambu building around the R1?”
If R1 is simply another enclosed 40–60W laser cutter, there are already many mature machines on the market.
But if Bambu manages to combine:
R1 + automation + safety + integrated extraction/filtration + Bambu Suite + MakerWorld + ready-to-make hybrid projects
then I think it becomes something much more interesting.
I already own a 30W fiber laser, so personally I don’t need R1 to replace every other laser technology.
I’d rather see Bambu create a platform that complements the tools we already have and expands what we can manufacture.
That, for me, would really deserve the name “personal manufacturing hub.”
