Bambu Lab R1: a new Ray of making, coming September

Biggest obstacles:

The fumes are crazy. Many won’t have the luxury of venting outside or pricey purifiers.

Near-zero ready to cut files exist online.

The parts look monotonous, don’t want to paint it

Imo the average user just won’t bother until these are solved / there won’t be enough hype/momentum once people realize the hassle involved even if promotional campaign got an initial purchase wave going.

Why not the nyan cat beam? Fires pulses synced with the music too.

My budget is $500 or less, I hope ONE version of the R1 will meet that price point.

It has been a long time since I have looked into laser state of the art.

Last time I looked I could not find a 3d printer tool changer, at a price I was willing to pay. That allowed laser and 3d printing in the same print. I am having a hard time imagining what I would actually use that for. There are ways around that with multiple pieces.

Yes there are 3d printers than have optional print heads. But “in the same print” is a different story.
combining is very problematic. Chamber maintenance with the smoke coating everything. Is very different than 3d printers. The minimum time between cleaning is very different in a smoker.

I would love it if I could 3d print something and then add text or details or finish the surface of my prints using a laser.

So instead of making color stickers/decals where you (2D) print and cut, I want to 3D print and then finish with the laser.

You described some of the pain points that leave room in this space for BL to come in to mitigate or solve, i.e. some of the reasons for BL to start on this journey with the R1.

I guess the value will depend on the price. Looking at other stand alone lasers vs prices bambu is selling just the laser units for h series I think they might struggle to compete on price. Does not look like they will compete on features either as there were no patent reports of any sorts relating to laser.

Time will tell. Let’s hope it’s something worth buying.

You make some very good points, and I actually agree with most of them.

Interchangeable diode/IR laser heads already exist, so simply adding swappable modules would not make the R1 revolutionary by itself.

For me, the real question is whether Bambu can do for lasers what it did for 3D printing: remove enough friction from the entire workflow that an average user can get good results without becoming a laser expert.

And I think the three issues you mentioned are exactly where the challenge is.

Fumes are probably the biggest barrier.
A truly consumer-oriented machine needs extraction, filtration and safety to feel like part of the product, not something the user has to engineer afterwards.

Then there is content.

This is where I think Bambu may have a very powerful advantage: MakerWorld.

Imagine downloading one project containing:

  • 3D printable parts

  • laser-cut parts

  • engraving data

  • material specifications

  • positioning information

  • tested laser parameters

You select the material, press Make, and the ecosystem handles most of the setup.

And this leads to what I personally find most interesting about the words “personal manufacturing hub.”

Maybe the goal isn’t simply:

3D printing OR laser cutting.

Maybe it’s:

3D printing + laser cutting + engraving + different materials + standard hardware = one finished product.

A designer could combine a printed structural part with laser-cut wood, acrylic, engraved panels, inserts or other materials in the same MakerWorld project.

That would also help solve the problem of laser projects sometimes looking visually repetitive. The laser wouldn’t need to be the entire manufacturing process — it becomes another tool in the workflow.

I also agree about UV. An expensive UV source moving around a large bed on a conventional gantry/CoreXY doesn’t seem like the most logical architecture. If Bambu eventually wants serious UV/fiber-style marking, I would expect a different optical approach or a dedicated marking system.

So after thinking about it, perhaps we’re asking the wrong question when we ask:

“How many watts will the R1 have?”

The much more interesting question might be:

“What ecosystem is Bambu building around the R1?”

If R1 is simply another enclosed 40–60W laser cutter, there are already many mature machines on the market.

But if Bambu manages to combine:

R1 + automation + safety + integrated extraction/filtration + Bambu Suite + MakerWorld + ready-to-make hybrid projects

then I think it becomes something much more interesting.

I already own a 30W fiber laser, so personally I don’t need R1 to replace every other laser technology.

I’d rather see Bambu create a platform that complements the tools we already have and expands what we can manufacture.

That, for me, would really deserve the name “personal manufacturing hub.”

Here is what I think:

To sum up all of my thoughts @BambuLab MUST get all three of the categories below to actually succeed in the Laser market.

  1. Price and Features:

Bambu must either:

A. Be a reasonably low price on market, with good features for its price

Or

B. Have the best features for its price point

  1. Community:

Bambu must make its laser “community” stronger by continuing to add more lasers for more/less experienced users, build up its user base, and get lots of laser models on MakerWorld. They have already kinda started this by putting lasers in their printers (ps I hate that idea).

  1. Accessibility, Add ons and Alterations:

To me this is the most important category. xTool is by FAR the largest in this space, and I have noticed they do a few things. They allow you to start with let’s say the base model laser, and later you want a better laser, well, you can buy one at a reasonable price and easily swap. They also have add-ons like the rotary laser, inkjet, and an air purifier. Bambu did the rotary and air purifier for the H series that has lasers so I expect to see those soon if not at launch. My one concern for Bambu is that they will not do the inkjet, but I think that is the MOST ESSENTIAL add on. Without it EVEYTHING you make is one color, and Bambu started the multi color revolution for 3D printers, I hope they do it here too.

If Bambu fails to do one or more of those three categories, I don’t see what would entice anyone to buy a Bambu laser when xTool already has a large and strong community. Bambu, please take my advice and make a inkjet or other things that set you apart from xTool.

But maybe Bambulab just starts a R1 - Resin One. Maybe with a different or same concept as all the other companies. Or a SLS printer, which I don’t guess. We will see in September.

IF this is based on the 10 & 40 Watt modules, and uses the same modules, I hope they have a bare bones option for those of us who already own the modules. I don’t use them even though I have them because of the Xtool UV and MOPA that I got later on that do all my laser work now, except for my big 100W CO2. The UV just does so much better than either Diode laser will ever accomplish, but for cutting through thin plywood that is between 12 and 18" long, I wouldn’t need to fire up the big guy.

I agree with you. Its likely they will get into resin printing in some form.

The Question is if the new Bambu Laser is better than an XTool M2 for example. XTool has a lot of experience and the Software is great.

Currently in the market for one, waiting for black friday deals.

The way bambu is doing their product stack i wouldn’t be surprised if they rebranded a handheld router or a dremel.
