As best as I can tell this is because you have multiple bodies. Placing text works fine if I only have one body, but once I add a second body I cannot place text on it and see the exact same symptoms you are seeing. I can place as many text_shapes on the first body but none on any other bodies.
If you do not see the text show up on the objects section then you know it was not placed.
Personally I think this is either a but or current limitation in the current version of the product.
