Bambu Studio - "By Object" improvement suggestion

Printing multiple objects “by object” instead of “by layer” can be very useful when printing multiple objects in different colors, since it means you can run multiple things at once without having to waste filament on hundreds of color changes.

However, using “by object” there is still a major limitation: each object can only be about 3.5 inches in height, since the build plate has to rise all the way back to the top again to start the second object and the only vertical space available is basically the height of the print head.

I have another suggestion: If would be great if you could add some kind of hybrid ‘by object’ mode: print just the bottom -x- layers of each object until you reach the 3.5" height limitation for each, then do a second pass to add next few 3.5 inches to each object, and another one after that if necessary.

That way you could still print full-height objects mostly per object, at the cost of just a single color purge every 3.5 inches of height or so. Still FAR more efficient than printing per-layer which would invoke hundreds of color switches and its associated waste.

This would be very useful to be able to print different objects at the same time overnight, while still conserving filament.

That… sounds like a good idea.

this is the best explanation ive seen. I’ve just encountered this limitation and the unusual purple wire frame limitation. I’ve only had the printer since christmas, so im learning, i was sticking to "by object to avoid filament waste during colour change, i guess i’ll have to get over it or print over 2 plates.
Your hybrid approach idea is a good one though. thanks

Thank you for articulating my thoughts. I came here to see if this idea has been implemented yet. It seems like a natural evolution to avoid bed height issues.
