Bambu Studio separating text object into individual letters

Through Bambu Studio v1.9.7 when an STEP (not STL) containing a text object was imported, a text object was a single line item object. Starting with v1.10 a text object is imported, the text is separated into individual letter line time objects. For example, the text “Text Test” is a single line item object in v1.9.7 but is 8 letter line item objects in v1.10. Images are attached.

This is a problem when printing text and a real problem when printing QR codes (100s of dots).

How can we disable this undesired change? Adding new features is nice, and desirable, but breaking or eliminating existing features annoys people and causes them to look for alternatives.

Let me know.

When you import an object that’s an STL, the slicer has no idea what the geometry it’s loading is. STLs are just long lists of undifferentiated polygons. Text geometry is no different than any other part of the STL.

So this has nothing to do with “text objects”.

How are you creating and exporting the CAD model?

You say STL, but, your images show a STEP file.

It is a STEP file, not STL.

This may be something you can fix with how you’re saving the STEP.

I just tried a STL with 3 separate unconnected objects (just simple cubes) and when I loaded the STL it treated them all as a single object, like it should.

The challenge with using STL is creating multiple files. With STEP you can have multiple objects in one file. To create the above example would require two STL files, on with the body and one with the text. A STEP file has both objects.

If you model the body and text together, and load them together, you shouldn’t need to move anything.

I guess I’m confused why you need to move the text after you’ve loaded the model… if the text is modeled in the right place in the CAD program, it should load in to the slicer in the right place, and nothing should need to be moved.

Each piece of each letter can now be modified/moved/colored individually.

Modifying/moving/coloring as a group is still possible using the usual Shift/Ctrl selections.

FWIW, this change is also present in OrcaSlicer 2.3.0-dev.

May not be what you require, but wouldnt the text editor in studio be a better solution ? rather than importing a file

Some of my model templates contain text and occasionally QR codes. The new object deconstruction “enhancement” means selecting 283 objects to set the QR code color. Originally only 1 object color would need to be set. Now add in text, text which is separated by lines (think paragraphs) and by font (size, style) or color. Then include the fact there are initially 18 objects which are now expanded to over 350 objects in random order. Yes, this change is a problem.

Much of my career centered on end user software development. That included upgrades and replacement systems. Since 95% of our customers were focused on 5% of our systems features, we didn’t take away features. Instead used Preference panels to provide the end user the option of using the new capabilities.

I have not found a feature in the last 10 Bambu Studio upgrades that directly improve my experience. The 5% I focus on is ease of text and color management. I have no interest/need in adjusting settings, different filament types, other slicers, … Those features are someone else’s 5%. Please correct this issue.
