Hello Everyone,

Has anyone got any experience with cutting screen protector films with the Cutting Module?

I am specifically trying to cut a screen protector on a H2D (to install onto a could of device screens). Have tried the typical self-cut-to-measure hard plastic screen protectors and recently a hydrogel film. I found that both were possible to cut, hydrogel more so than the harder plastic screen protector material. Was able to kiss-cut (not cut the backing material) on both too after some cutting force calibration.

The issue I have run into is that I think the material is getting deformed at the cut edges, when applied to a glass surface, my test pieces stick perfectly well in the middle, but the outer edge will never stay stuck to the screen. It is almost like there is a air bubble all the way around the end of the cut piece.

I suspect the official screen protector machines that do this must cut in a particular way to achieve a clean cut. Note: The cutting module cuts visually look great.

Has anyone had any experiences trying this on the BambuLab cutting module? Thanks,

The cutting blade has a certain thickness so the material has to be pushed slightly sideways to make space for the cutter.
Since you are in full material that force is equal on both sides of the blade.

I would guess that cutting it a couple of mm larger, and then slowly work your way towards the finished size, might cause less stress on the final part at the edges as a narrow piece on one side allows that side to move away from the cut line.
I would guess that a stepover of 0.3-0.5mm could reduce that effect.

It’s a theory of course.

Thank you for your thoughts there Gerrit. I can see the concept here. Would you recommend that the first (larger) cut is made and material around that removed before attempting to make the smaller cut? Or would this require one larger cut, and then immediately followed by the exact size cut without removing any material?

I have been trying to get Bambu Suite to cut the outer piece first but it seems to always pick the order irrespective of the sequence in the object list. I’ll keep on playing with Bambu Suite to see if i can get it to cut the outer item first. Thanks for your input

I personally haven’t used the cutter on my printer yet. So far only the laser.

So I might have to dig into Bambu Suite to see what’s possible.

My first thought would be to remove the material before the next cut, so you are sure it doesn’t interfere with the next cut.

I understand that this is a tedious process but when proven successful, you can consider improving the process further.

If you would first create all the objects on one plate, you can then move them to individual plates/jobs giving more control over the order.

I would try for all the cuts to start outside of the material, so it’s not a closed loop.

If I understand what you are attemping here I can guess at a couple of things. The screens you are cutting have adhesive with a pull off backing on them? If so it’s possible that (1) during the cutting process there is some movement between the the screen and the backing causeing the adhesive to weaken or (2) the cutting is causesing a burr (or deformation as you stated) to form along the edge keeping it from laying flat. Have you tried flipping the material over and cutting from the other side?
