It’s more nuanced than that. There are multiple issues at play - design copyright, trademark and patent all play a part of IP infringement. Because the specifics are somewhat subjective on a case by case basis it’s sometimes not clear cut. For example something that is generic (say a coat hook) would likely not be infringing even if you designed it exactly like one that already exists. However something with an artistic design could infringe even if you only copied part of it, likewise a trademark. For trademark you have to show a likelihood of market confusion so parody marks are often ok. If it was a copyright strike they really should give the user the info and an opportunity to appeal becasue there are a lot of false copyright claims on the the internet (even to the point of copying text and posting it as a backdated article then claiming copyright). Makerwold may not have yet reach the level of maturity to have a Trust and Safety team that’s versed in this.
[can you tell I’ve spent way to long talking to IP lawyers at work]
I don’t fully understand the site beyond downloading models but I’ve read this type of story to figure the whole Boosting thing is something I should stay away from so I don’t risk getting banned. I’ve let “Boosts” expire several times and figure, whatever🤷🏻♂️, I lose nothing by not boosting AFAIK, and I don’t risk getting banned.
I also often re-download files as the file names are often not good or in a different language so I misplace them. So I can either search and search in my files or take 2 seconds to download again.
Also, although I rarely have my vpn on when visiting the site, I sometimes do have it on because I forget it’s on, so that could cause a misunderstanding also if I boost something.
So if simply not boosting will keep me from a misunderstandings, I’m better off not giving out boosts and just letting them expire.
I was banned… why are more people not talking about this outside of the forum? how can we expect them to fix these issues if we do not talk about it as designers? I did a you tube video and looks like im the only one talking about it
They just reinstated… they banned me because of the same language as yours… however… after a month and a you tube video… its reinstated. Mine was because " to many people downloaded in a short amount of time
I did the appeal they basically said nope you’re still banned.
Kept it open as for a manual nothing happened this went on for five or six times and then finally I just said I’m not going to get the result that I’m looking for which is why I got banned in the first place and ultimately why that band got changed to a year-long suspension which I still felt was unfair…
It took me doing the YouTube video for someone from bamboo/maker world to connect with me
Thank you to keep this post alive… in the end I got an answer for the support, i don’t violate any copiyright rule (as already explained before), they banned me because they told that I had too much download (in fact, every of my model was betwen 10 and 40 download, I don’t think that any has more than this download.
For this reason, i moved all my model on other platform and stop put my newest design here, preferring other platform
I create a new makerworld account only to download the model because I still have a bamboo
Gabric,
Okay I just went through this whole post thread and I find it interesting how obviously you were banned for a year and it goes into copyright there are plenty of other things on makerworld that could be categorized as copyright.
Are you still banned for a year,?
One of your comments was that you did the appeal they sent back a generic answer so you can’t appeal again that’s incorrect I responded five or six times on my appeal got no response so I ended up doing a YouTube video.
I really don’t understand how you can have over 4000 views of this thread multiple comments likes and dislikes but still no one’s really talking about this and making it a big deal enough for the community.
I recently was banned for a year and that suspension did get turned over but I had to make a big deal about it because I didn’t do anything wrong.
The system is not designed to protect anyone in particular it’s designed for the simple fact of protecting the points.
So if they see anomalies in your downloads and have the data that maybe one particular person is consistently downloading your models or they have a higher percentage over everyone else the system just assumes that it’s you or someone you know trying to beat the system for the points.
I personally don’t think it’s a copyright issue based on the comments you made and your other models but I would fight it do a manual review. Something that was not communicated anywhere in the appeal process when you start it.
I didn’t even know about the manual review until after I did my YouTube video . I didn’t even know there was a forum so I joined the forum and then I put in banded and found four or five topics with loads of interaction which really blew my mind because I really felt alone in this process of not understanding why I got banned because I hadn’t even logged into the account for like 6 months.lol.
Keep your head up man designers tend to get overlooked but you’re needed we’re needed and you got to fight the good fight request a manual review respond back to the appeal do everything you can to find out the actual answer of why . Because until they respond you with an actual answer everything else is speculation based on experience from other users.
Could you elaborate on how you made a big deal about it?
I assume no one is discussing it because no popular or credible creators with significant reach have been targeted by the system yet or we don’t know about it. For spectators, it’s difficult—if not impossible—to comment on individual cases without full access to all the data. People often disclose only the information that supports their side of the story, which makes it hard to form a balanced view. Platforms often enforce bans in ways that lack transparency. Without clear explanations or publicly accessible evidence, it’s hard for anyone to confidently argue for or against a ban. This ambiguity creates an environment where people prefer to stay silent rather than risk defending someone who might have been banned for legitimate reasons.
And if someone isn’t directly affected, they might not feel compelled to speak up. Without a strong connection to the person banned, it’s easier to ignore the situation entirely.
I made a big deal by making my video… Just because your not think your not a popular or credible creator… doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be treated with respect.
“his ambiguity creates an environment where people prefer to stay silent rather than risk defending someone who might have been banned for legitimate reasons.”
well looks like , im that guy…lol… im actually editing the follow- up video right now.
I remember watching that video and thinking you didn’t know how to use the platform so you went about uploading stuff the exact way a point farmer would do it so of course they banned you.
hey don, Yeah thats what i talked about in the resolution video. There is alot of " speculation" when you get banned. i think that Uhl hit the nail on the head.
I think they were banned because they boosted their own model, when asked what model they boosted they stated that all of their models were taken down, implying that it was their model that they boosted. I believe the reason for the ban was because they farmed boosts for several weeks then tried to boost themselves.
