BBS won't do any other z-hop than spiral

I’m having problems with neighbors complaining about noise, and I try to reduce the noise of my P2S. The worse offender is by far the z-hop, and I try to use slope of normal rather than spiral, and no way: Wether I set it in extruder settings or in filament override, the slicer will still use spiral z-hop.

I’m going crazy here, the setting is supposed to work, it doesn’t.. (and it’s not just the preview, the print definitely spiral shakes violently every few seconds.

It is the latest 66 version of BBS, I have tried closing and opening it again, switched around the z-hop settings many times, tried Arachne slicing, nothing changes.

edit: after much back and forth I managed to get “normal” to stick, better than nothing. Slope just won’t be anything else than spiral.

The comment there suggests the following:

When using the slope Z Hop Type without sufficient trace length for slope, the spiral Z Hop Type will be used. For example, if a layer ends in an arc, a slope cannot be generated above the arc’s trace (it must be a slope line), so the spiral Z Hop Type will be used.
This doesn’t mean the set type doesn’t work when changing layers, but rather that it doesn’t work in locations where a slope can’t be generated. If you don’t want to use the spiral Z Hop Type, try using the normal Z Hop Type, which works in all locations where a lift needed.

And this does seem to be the case from some tests I’ve done. Though I can’t seem to get rid of all spiral hops when using “Slope” type on a basic large cube… but it does remove one out of three spirals, for example, so the change is doing something. And “Normal” indeed always seems to override spiral.

EDIT: Ah, where the seams are positioned makes a big difference! Logical, in retrospect.

Maybe give that a shot.

I wish they could default to normal and not to spiral, that would allow to use slope while avoiding spiral. Also: they have good documentation, it should be mentionned.

I will be using normal and look for other ways to reduce z-hop noise.

Try reducing your acceleration and jerk to reduce some of the noise. Wiped Spiral Z hops make a lot of motor and motion noise because they have to arrest motion back to 0 and reverse it, then re-accel in a new direction to the next spot etc. Can’t just coast to the next spot. It’s often the highest accel and jerk the machine will produce.

Yes, thanks for the tip, it would surely help to slow it down. I’m not great fan of violent motion anyway. Ok it works, but noise aside, it feels like it would wear down the hardware faster than needed.

Sadly the z-hop itself is quite noisy, and the major thing you hear when running at 50% speed. I haven’t found a way to show that down, if anyone knows I’m interested :slight_smile:

Excellent point on noise reduction. The speeds and especially acceleration make a big difference with the noise. As a bonus, the print quality tends to improve with smoother speed transitions as well. I turned the jerk settings down a bit for the printer config I use most often, figuring maybe it’ll be easier on the printer moving parts overall, though I wasn’t thinking of noise specifically.

From what I can tell, the travel speed and acceleration print settings have the most direct effect on the movement speed during retraction/hop.
