I have been researching the best 3D printers for beginners because I want something easy to use, reliable, and capable of producing good-quality prints without a huge learning curve. I’m a huge fan of the A1 for beginners because it is easy to set up and requires little tuning to produce good prints. The auto bed leveling, Bambu Studio, and Bambu Handy make the whole process easier, and the open-frame design helps new users see and understand what is happening. It also has readily available replacement parts and a large community, making it easier to get help when needed. It’s also at a great price point before diving into more complex machines. It will very likely be on sale at the end of this month. Bambu typically runs an anniversary sale at the end of June.
If you want an open-source ecosystem, then I’d recommend a Creality printer. K2 or K2 pro should be good enough, it just requires a tiny bit of tinkering at times. Trust me, the learning curve is not that bad. My friend has a modded K2, it’s not as easy to use as a Bambu but you’ll get used to it.
If you just want to print in a few clicks without any fuss at all, then get a Bambu. I’d recommend the P2S if you’re a complete beginner. It’s only about 1249 AUD for the combo. If your budget is tight I recommend an A1. I have one, and after 300 print hours and TPU clogging the extruder twice, it’s still fine. But be warned that Bambu’s ecosystem is exactly the opposite of open source.
I wouldn’t recommend a Flashforge with their smaller ecosystem, but it’s your choice in the end.
A quick note on where to find models: Makerworld has many high quality models, and opens directly to BBS, which allows printing in about 6 clicks, literally. However, its models are often strictly licensed so you can’t sell them or even give them away for free. Printables also has good models that are open source, but you can’t open directly to BBS.
Just a few points you should keep in mind, without recommending a specific manufacturer at this point:
Who is a reliable supplier of replacement parts?
Who offers a wiki / repair guides / videos?
Who offers a helpful community?
Especially for beginners: Who offers ready-made models with print profiles? You can make your own later on.
Would you like to build your own models someday? Who offers refinancing for your hobby?
You can always resell the printer you’re buying now: Which one will be easy to resell?
I just decided to go with Bambu back then because it allowed me to refinanced my hobby, and since then I haven’t had to spend a single cent on filament or accessories. I can’t say whether this is possible with other manufacturers, but as I said, that could be an interesting question.
The learning curve isn’t just the printer itself, but also CAD and, if desired, Blender if you want to create your own models. You don’t have to be an expert, but it helps to learn the basics.
This is probably going to ruffle some feathers, but if you really want to learn about printers (not just print) and you don’t have a strict budget one option is buy a Prusa Core One kit. Sure it’s over-priced compared to the competition but having built mine I learned a lot about how Core XY printers function. It is also extremely easy to maintain and repair.
I’d probably consider the Cobra X over A1 and the others.
With less than 300$ you get multicolor/multimaterial capabilities with less waste than an A1, and better flex/TPU usage than any bambu…
I wouldrecommend elegoo centauri carbon. It’s cheap and works like a dream. Now there’s also elegoo centauri carbon 2 that can do multicolor. I prefer the simplicity of ecc1 though
Just a reminder, if you do get a Bambu then don’t get their filament. It’s expensive, and you can get stuff for about 20 AUD that’s just as good.
Personally, I don’t appreciate what Bambu’s doing to the community but it’s your choice, if you just wanna print and you don’t care about the ecosystem of your printers that much, then you should get something like a P2S.

It’s your choice really. Bambu’s filament is pretty easy to print compared to others. I just never buy filament more than 2kg a time because I don’t print too many things, so the discount doesn’t apply for me.
Ok. I get it. I just try to avoid statements that are over generalized.
Let’s say “if you do not purchase more than 10kg at a time, there are cheaper options than Bambu filament”
Polymaker and Elegoo are some of my favorites. You can usually get it for around $11 to $15 per kg. Only issue is that some people have a vendetta against cardboard spools for some reason.
I have both ecc’s and I actually prefer the ECC1’s print quality too. Those things can repeat just as good as a P1S. The ECC2’s AMS system is pretty sweet though, I love core-held spools
Isn’t that a bit like saying, if you want to learn how to repair motorcycles, buy a Harley. A Bambu Lab printer is more like a Honda, they just work with a bare minimum of maintenance.
Not really since, when you buy a Harley (and I’ve owned a few) it doesn’t come as a box of parts that you have to self-assemble. And when the oxygen sensor burned out on my Harley I had to have it towed into the dealer.
I had a great experience building my Core One and in the process learned a lot. It’s also way more easily repairable than my H2D.
