Best Buy deals

Best Buy is now offering 15% discount on new customers’ 1st order through its credit card. Normally I don’t bother with store credit card, but it’s worth the hassle for large purchase. I plan to get two H2S combo which is the same price as BL, save $420 after the discount.

As usual when applying new credit card, read the fine prints.

You don’t receive a discount; instead, the difference is paid out as reward points: 7.5 points per $1 spent. It’s not a discount, you pay full price, but you earn points - which you can then reuse.

… and don’t forget to balance your credit card bill at the end of the month - the fees are outrageous:

  • 30% annual percentage rate - APR - for purchases
  • plus penalty fees up to $41

For example, the rate on my card is only 9%, and there’s no penalty fee.

Credit cards are useful if you don’t carry a balance, otherwise they’re a total scam. Off topic for a sec, google fractional reserved banking system which is how the entire US economy works, imaginary money at work.

Anyway, I always pay off the monthly balance, so it’s like an ultra short term interest free loan + free stuff (reward points).

Thanks for clearing up the fine prints. Still though, a $420 store credit is something if you don’t carry a balance.

I’ll read the fine prints when I pull the trigger, it would not surprise me if there is a cap on store credits or item exclusions.

Just think about it logically: No retailer would just sell their products at a lower price for no reason. If an offer seems too good to be true, then it probably isn’t true.

They’re definitely counting on the fact that many people forget to balance their credit cards. With many service providers, this happens automatically and no fee, but here it seems it ust be done manually - it’s easy to forget.

I read it in the fine print: “With a Total or Plus membership and the My Best Buy Credit Card.” That means you need a Total or Plus membership.

  • Total membership cost is 199.99/year
  • Plus membership cost is 29.99/year

Most importantly, you can then redeem your points for “certificates”. So, from points to certificates- I actually had to look up what that was myself first.

For every 250 My Best Buy points you receive, you will be eligible to receive a $5 reward certificate. Excluding “Non-Qualifying Redemptions. Certificates can expire. These have a hard expiration deadline and will expire on the date indicated on each certificate.

Like I said, I don’t want to stop you, but you should be sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. You’re committed for at least one year.
