"best" settings for Order of walls?

I was wondering what the benefits / drawbacks of these settings are:

  • inner / outer
  • outer / inner
  • inner wall / outer wall / inner wall

I mainly print statues and organic figures if that helps

thanks!

Can’t comment on the last, but outer/inner gives better geometric accuracy ehile being bad for overhangs. That is why inner/outer is set as default. It tends to have less sagging as the inner walls are printed without an overhang first.

Awful ascii land, but imagine these being printed in the specified order

 122 221
  12221
   121
STABLEBASE

or

 211 112
  21112
   212
STABLEBASE

In the first “diagram”, the overhung "1"s are printed first, into nearly thin air and with nothing to help attach it to the side. It will likely just flow down, roll off the previous layer’s edge, and look like a loose spaghetti strand.

In the second “diagram”, every “1” is printed upon a foundation, and so the “2” gets to stick onto the side wall of “1” for help despite being overhung over thin air. It might detach still, but it’s got a fighting chance of staying in the right shape before it soldifies.

In both cases, the first line is the most accurate line that the machine can create, as the second ones bump against already-extruded lines, which can magnify defects.

If you have organic shapes and overhangs, you’ll be much happier with inner/outer results.

If you’re in CAD-land and can guarantee your design such that overhangs won’t exceed ~25degrees [nerd fights here about the right number], outer/inner will give you better dimensional accuracy.

thanks! I’m trying both settings on a model right now.
what about the third option? I imagine it’s there because it has its use, but in which case?

Thank you for this explanation! It makes so much sense now. I always wondered why I read people recommending outside walls first then inside but then see bamboo studio default to insight first then outside. If it was clearly better, why wouldn’t they just set that as default? So I started questioning the advice of others even though the idea of outside first just makes more sense in terms of print quality and accuracy.

Good explanation! I appreciate it :+1:
