Better/Fixed Custom Filament Profile Management

Custom filament profiles for third-party filament are currently mostly broken.

With Bambu filament being often out of stock, buying third-party filament is a necessity to keep building and printing. Third-party filaments extend the capabilities of Bambu printers, and many of the features requested below would also benefit Bambu filaments directly.

It would be great to see the following improvements / Usecases:

  • The user wants to clearly tell the difference between a “Custom Filament” and a “Filament Preset.” Currently there’s no way to distinguish them in the “Prepare” project filament selection.
  • The user wants to see vendor folders in the drop-down of the “Prepare” project filament selection.
  • The user wants synchronization between Filament Presets, Custom Filaments, AMS, and Filament Management to work reliably. Right now:
    • Some custom filaments can’t be selected in the AMS.
    • Some custom filaments can’t be selected in Filament Management.
    • Some filaments can be selected in the AMS but not in Filament Management, and vice versa.
  • The user wants to rename filaments (vendor / serial). This doesn’t appear to be possible today.
  • The user wants to convert a preset into a filament type. This doesn’t appear to be possible today.
  • The user wants to import custom filaments. This doesn’t appear to be possible today only preset imports seem to work.
    • Several vendors provide preset downloads (e.g. Siraya Tech, eSUN) that currently have to be used as template projects (Siraya Tech) or imported as presets that can’t be used for AMS / Filament Management (eSUN).
  • The user wants to edit settings for all presets (printers / nozzles) together.
    • Physical properties like density shouldn’t be able to differ between printers / nozzles.
    • The user wants to create a draft / template for a new filament across printers / nozzles, and then fine-tune each one separately.
  • The user wants support for multiple presets for a single filament, for example:
    • Multiple print temperatures for Bambu Aero PLA/ASA, colorFabb VarioShore TPU, and Siraya Tech AERO TPU/PEBA.
    • Glass / normal profiles for clear PC/PETG.
