Blast oven filament drying

Hi,

I purchased the 101-0bs:
From here:

At the back it has a fan. At left and side it has openings that can be closed (adjustable)

Not the best workmanship but reasonable. its a bit small, may hold maybe two spools (25 x 25 x 25, internal)

I am planing to use it for filament drying. I wonder if the side openings should be closed ?

Anyone has experience with such an oven ?

Thanks,
Noam.

The last time I discussed using a real oven in the mix, my comment was removed, and I was chastised.

Be warned.

Unless you are feeding in dry air, it will work best open like this. It will have no problem maintaining the temperature, the fan is just recirculating, it doesn’t blow out those vents.

I have a unit that is basically the same but I got the one that is taller instead of wider. Wider would probably work better for parts. This one fit in my space better for me and I like the vent out the top. The sides only get warm to touch. The AMS HT actually gets hotter to touch on the sides. I do get heat coming out the top, more when the fan is on.

I keep the top mostly closed as the heating element cycles less and I don’t get any thermal runaway or overshoot. I don’t have any issues with filament not drying fast enough. It actually dries faster than what they say. As long as there is somewhere for moisture to escape too it will be fine especially with how long we dry filament for. I 3D printed a custom rack for mine. The original rack height would only let me get 2 rolls in if laying down or standing up. The 3rd would technically fit (in either direction) but it touches the thermistor probe at the top. My rack lets me stand the rolls up and they don’t roll around. I made the center a hollow cradle so it drops the rolls down about 20mm. This configuration also lets the hot air (on mine) blow around the filament from the bottom and out the top. It now has 35-40mm on the bottom and 20mm on the top below the thermistor.

I’ve never before heard of one with adjustable side openings. On the other hand, yours is only 500w, so maybe that’s why.

Mine is 1500w. It has side openings, but I don’t remember them as being adjustable.

Unless you have a specific reason to close them, I would leave them open. That way you’re less likely to overheat the control circuits.

I just went back and looked at the one he posted. If you look at the one he posted there is actually two configurations on 6 different models A-F. If it has the controls on the LEFT the vent is in the TOP. If it has the Controls on the TOP then the vent is on the side LEFT. The Controls on top are kind of weird to me as that’s where I would image the controls would get heat soaked the easiest and possibly damaged.

How big is the unit? That’s a substantial heating element unless its much larger than these listed.

Mine is only 600w and for its size it heats up in like 5-10 minutes depending on temperature. Tested, it usually only drawing 350-450w on startup and then settles down to like 180-190w while running. I’m very happy with the energy consumption.

Good catch. In that case, he should take his own photos of exactly what he has and then post them here for further comment.

Hi,

The unit is 500W, its not a lot but for up to 120-140 degree for 1-2 spools I think its OK…

Noam.

At $135.92 USD, that looked like a good option for a two spool dryer.
Especially since it said “Incl. import charges.”

Then I looked closer, cheapest shipping option, $399.93!
:astonished:
I’m too old to emigrate.

£47 , but £110 shipping .

500w should be fine. Once its up to temp it wont being using much.

When I went down the rabbit hole trying to find the one I bought. They were all really high with like $100 shipping or they were all really cheap with like $300-400 shipping. In the end everything I looked at was between 450-700 out the door.

My first one arrived with the whole front door shattered. So hopefully when yours comes it’s in good condition. The outside box had no damage that I could see.

Not sure if this rack would work with your oven. I posted it on Makerworld if it’s helpful.

Hi,

I just found an oven that may be resonably priced at $255, free shipping from US:

That’s the exact same model I have, and I’ve not had any problems. It’s built like a tank, with very thick metal.

I’ve never purchased anything from AliExpress. What happens if I have damage on the unit or I wish to return it. Is it a huge hassle?

Best advice is to be leery of sellers who have little feedback and/or started selling in only the last year or two. Especially the ones who are offering prices that sound too good to be true. Unfortunately, you can never know for sure, but this may be one of those occasions.
