thanks a lot very cool feature
It’s about time boosts were linked to the requirement that you print the item in the first place. Ideally, the boost should count more if the user also publishes a photo. Bambu tells us about changes to the boost system to encourage complex models, while the basics of the system are still not working at all.
We know exactly what is happening now: Once it works, all the scammers will see it and flood the marketplace with children’s pictures.
I would also be in favour of a strict rule against children pictures, as not even the origin is verified and whether the child does it voluntarily. It’s also about protecting children, whether it’s a father who doesn’t think about it or a fraud.
We’re having parallel discussions over in Reddit too: https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/1j7y4px/unpopular_opinion_makerworld_is_a_popularity/ I agree with everythign you’re saying.
My thought was to have a separate category where younger designers could post their designs. Most of this reeks of fake stories and manipulation of the community to farm points.
Thanks for sharing the thread, the really amazing thing is to see people supporting these designs, they really trust that it is 100% a true story.
Not exactly on topic, but, I don’t think photos should include faces of people, especially not kids.
As to charity, the new commercial subscription seems a reasonable place for charity earnings.
The designer could say 100% of the money goes to a charity.
The big problem though is charity is a legal term.
Is there a charity number, a registered address, or any of the other legal obligations including filing to the local government?
If not, it isn’t a legal charity that has been verified by the country in which it resides. Unregistered charities are illegal in many countries.
I can’t see Bambu wanting any part of that mess.
It’s been bugging me for a little while. As a new designer it frutrates me that the models are getting rewarded for the backstory moreso than the design itself. I personally reward models that show thoughtful and creative solutions to a problem.
We all have backstories but I feel it is exploitative to use that for rewards. I prefer for the design to speak for itself without added context. The only caveat would be what I suggested over in Reddit:
Have a category for these kind of models. Where young designers can showcase their work. Or charities can solicit rewards.
Hej the second one is my daughters! How weird to see it in this topic. I am reacting to this without reading the comments first. I will read those after my own comment because I want to explain my own standpoint before reading others.
My daughter legitimately made that pencil. When I uploaded her model I didn’t even know how boosts worked. We read the comments together and she LOVES the nice things people say and I have always told her id someone boosted her model. I also don’t think I asked for boosts in the text, there isn’t even a “boost me” button on there. Last week I used some of the gift cards we earned. My daughter has chosen a filament color for her points. She chose the PLA cotton candy cloud basic gradient and was very very happy when she got it.
So thats my daughters story, she is 9, she made it, she got her boosts in filament (she got more actually)
However, I saw the fish. And I don’t really know how I feel about that. We can never check how the money is used but that is often the case with things like go fund me. I am a physically disabled mother myself (powerchair user), with two daughters of which one also uses a wheelchair. We needed a wheelchair van and a big one. We also need expensive new floors in our home because wheelchairs and floors are a pain in the butt. I know lots of people who set up campaigns to fund a wheelchair accessible car or maybe some home renovations. Those things are crazy expensive and most people I know hate they have to beg for money to be able to live. We have never done that as a family and I would sink into the ground if I would ever need to. It is horrible.
But those campaigns are much more transparent. Your name is visible and most of the time people who donate are from your area. In this fish case it is totally anonymous. We just don’t know. I won’t boost things like this. Also nobody is forcing people to boost, it is your own choice.
Edit: I read this again and I feel the need to explain myself a bit further. I do not seek pity or boosts or something like that by posting my own story. That part is posted because I want people to understand that I personally know a lot of people who try crowdfunding because of disability and health costs. I know how hard it can be and how it can bring you down when it is done transparently. This via makerworld is not that. That is my point. Hope that is clear.
See that ukraine wrist splint model? How do you think about that one? I saw it just because of your photo and I have complicated feelings about it. I made a wrist splint a week ago, this one is from yesterday.
My one took a long time to model and lots of iterations. I have no idea how this person did it, but I do see his model is different. He is new, and two of the 3 designs he published are “for ukraine”. I have questions about that to be honest.
That ukraine brace is not well made and has more boosts in the last 17 hours then my brace. I don’t care if that person really sends the funds to ukraine, but then just use a good brace and not this one.
Just be careful you read them first. I had a look through the comments on the above models and they’re not always nice.
I think you just ended up in the mix above because you mention your daughter in the model title. Yours is up there for two months and has 13 boosts according to the screenshot. The rocket right below has been up for two days and is at 249. You also don’t include your daughter in the model picture. So it’s not exactly the same thing.
Okay, that’s another perspective that is also valid. Like you said, it’s basically money for low effort models. That’s being discussed in another thread right now about the boost system changes. I also think some of it goes hand in hand with the changes to the way boosts are now distributed since the beginning of the week.
I have also seen that model, with 2 discharges it got 110 boosts in less than 1 day. Which translates into just over 125 dollars in coupons for the bambulab store, as many users have been saying for months, the impulses should only be delivered if you have printed the file previously, it is the easiest way to solve the problem. I understand that the very complex models with many plates, and many pieces would be more damaged, but it is as simple as making an impulse for complex models worth 30-40 points, and not 15 as it is currently. It would be a more balanced system, also, complex models should have a badge that marks them as “complex designs” that could be given manually after a manual request from the designer.
@MakerWorld @BambuLab Don’t you think it would be a good change for our community?
I think it’s a bit dodgy to tie a charity in with the expectations of downloads/boost. If one cares as much about a charity, they should just donate their points/earnings in general, and not tie it in through a specific object, or goat people into downloading their models just for that reason.
When people/corporations advertise about donating profits to a charity, to me it says they don’t care about charity, but just want to push an image for profits, because people will give up their money/time out of feels rather than the quality of the product.
I feel the same way about kids in conjunction with models, but it’s a little more gray. I trust @familieKP well enough, but I don’t entirely trust others. I’ve seen some dodgy stuff; people trying to use their kids for profit.
Although with kids, at the same time, they’re curious little creatures that love making stuff and sharing their work too. I think it’s hard to say for sure at times, well, was this a kid, or someone’s idea to try and drum up support.
I am having trouble with this ukraine brace. I can see it is not a good one and although it is not a direct copy of my brace (on which I worked hard and still am working on), I get the idea it is at least a copy of the idea.
The way that brace is made it won’t work. In my opinion! There are also no photos of the back of the brace and the finger part. Which makes me think it is purely a boost farming thing. I myself made a brace after making thumb braces, because I use these myself. I have a disability. I hope this person is genuine but if that person was genuine, why not just ask if he/she could use a model that is tested and works. They could ship those as well.
Clownfish: Unless they can prove it’s going to charity, yeah no. Same goes for all the “charity” models.
For the other three, yeah, if it’s true (which I suspect it is) then it’s fine with me.
So, to put my money where my mouth is and show that this is exactly the kind of low effort model that they (BL) don’t want boosts to go to unnecessarily… it was:
- sketch
- revolve
- extrude
- fillet (not chamfer)
- mirror (only sketched the one side of wings)
…oh, and it came out at two minutes and change. So, I can probably take 20 minutes and guide an 8-10 year old along the way of thinking that they more or less did it themselves. It’s encouraging, teaches new skills, etc. Not sure though that whole story and the pic of a kid as part of the model pic is needed.
If you’d like to check the actual smoothness of surfaces, etc. You can find the thing here:
That title is perfection
From a logistics point of view, they should probably send a printer instead and print the file right there instead of shipping them.
…and we all know Paddington is real, because we’ve all seen the movies.
Yes that is so true! I see long discussions under that model also.
I feel that the way that brace is made it really won’t work either.
Boosted paddington for the creativity <3
This is going to be the new flexy legs.
