I just want to ask the community their opinion, is it legitimate to use children and charity to ask for boosts or get people to give them away voluntarily?
Please let’s have a healthy and respectful debate.
My biggest worry is, how do we know these stories are real and not just a clever use of social engineering to get bigger rewards?
Of course it is voluntary, that’s why I ask, these models are proliferating and it is a matter of time before farmers realize it and use it illegally.
Anyway, in the community rules it says that you can not ask or use techniques to ask or get impulses by deception, so I’m asking, how do we know that this is real? How do we know it is not a scam?
I understand that it is voluntary to be believed if that model was made by a child, but in the case of the “Charity”, shouldn’t some kind of proof or filter be required? Maybe you could set up an official system of collaboration with NGOs, and that designers mark the design they want and automatically those revenues are sent to the chosen NGO? This system already exists in other places such as PayPal payments.
I saw this model, too.
Beside of my personal opinion, it is at least a grey area of using “boosts”. Don’t forget, not the user is paying for the boost, it is MW. If MW want to make a donation for charity, that is fine. But forcing MW to donate by using this models, is something which can lead to further boost restrictions, that nobody of us want to have.
While it’s impossible to give an absolute answer for any individual case, I’d say it’s highly likely that people will begin to game the system by making up stories like this. It’s no coincidence multiple people try to copy this concept after this one design made by a child was very successful.
By the way, this has happened to ANY monetized system. I get people always try to expect the best from others, but you’d be surprised how far people are willing to go as soon as there is money in the equation. I had insights from a different monetized system, and I know how far people go as soon as you can earn money. There will always be people choosing the “lazy route” instead of trying to play by the rules and enjoy the rewards.
Sure, but it’s not guilty until proven innocent. If some dad says to his daughter… should we put your model online… I’ll buy you ice cream or a bike (depending on the points) and they are both in agreement…
…but let’s not be naive, of course you’re not wrong when suggesting that this can be easily abused by not so ethical folks and if this money is going towards dad’s new X1, it’s a different story. Not every child actor is being exploited though… also, they’re not saying “if you boost this, I’ll do this for you” as in gaming the system by trading boosts. If people like a “heartwarming story” and they think giving a boost is the right response (which is probably isn’t, but that’s my opinion), that’s just what it is for the time being.
You could (not saying you should) make the case though that they sort of kickstarted that by choosing the last model that @Eleazar_3DinPlastic has listed up there for an “Excellent Participation Award” in the Shoe Rack Design Contest; thereby legitimizing (if not encouraging) this kind of behavior…
…but again, only because there is a child in the commercial you see on TV, YT, or wherever… does that mean you run out and buy the product? It’s really neither here nor there.
Yeah i think many are gaming the system and i highly doubt the one little girl mad the rocket in fusion, that one jumps out at me most. Sadly MW doesnt seem to care as many of us try to report cheaters thieves etc and most go unpunished. There is no way of policing such stories really but I guarantee im not boosting such things. I have a pretty good BS detector
Takes about 2 minutes to sketch, revolve the body and extrude the wings in Fusion… so make that 20 minutes instead and spend some quality time with your kid. Of course you tell them afterwards, good job… look at the nice rocket you made. You don’t tell a kid they didn’t “really” draw that when they do a paint-by-color book, do you? Now, did the daughter get up early, got on dad’s computer and designed a rocket… yeah, probably not.
The other models are obviously made by children(note all the flaws). Fusion is complicated even for adults, the kid probably had her hand on the parents hand as the parent designed it at the most, but to use a child as a pawn is pretty pathetic. All the chamfers and smooth transitions on the rocket does not jive with me, its more complex than simply extruding a sketch. Sorry if you are easily fooled, but again I will never boost such things.
I’m not easily fooled, just said two minutes because that’s how long it’d take me to do this in fusion. Went and had a look at the model right now… actually, fillets not chamfers. Okay, you got me… would take me two minutes and ten seconds now.
I don’t know… this here Contra-Rotating Propellers by Bjoern 3D - MakerWorld took me less than an hour including two test prints to check tolerances. And this here Rococo Heart Pendant by Bjoern 3D - MakerWorld was about 10 minutes in Fusion. Doubt it has anything to do with adult vs child… even with adults you’ll find that some take 5 minutes and other 5 hours to do the same thing in Excel, etc.
not disagreeing with you… that’s exactly what I said above. But even then you tell the kid “good job, look at the nice rocket ‘you’ made” and don’t take credit for it. That doesn’t mean that you make that a public story and use it for your model description.
“Coincidentally” the girl’s model rocket, just disappeared from the ‘trend 7 days’ and ‘boost 7 days’ panels, this makes me think that clearly MakerWorld is actively monitoring this post. But the model is still posted, so, it’s an awkward grey area, but it’s not illegal?
Perhaps @MakerWorld should dedicate profiles for charities that can be verified as accepting and recieving donations from individuals , as for the use of children by certain individuals , just an opinion but they should be removed along with the new to makerworld stream of child images being added as print profiles
Well, we’re probably more in the ethical / unethical territory with this one, rather than legal / illegal…
Yeah, but put yourself in their shoes for a moment. At the moment they’re trying to realign their incentive strategy as far as how they’d like boost tokens to work in theory versus what’s happening in the real world. And if you read the blog post, you can understand their intentions if you’ve ever rolled out incentive systems anywhere. But then forum discussions about it show you the other side of the coin that always happens too, no matter how well you communicate a system change. In this case, people got very hung up on the “complex” models and think they’re getting “punished” if they boost anything else.
Turn Your Portrait into a Lifelike 3D Masterpiece
personally i dont agree with what could be considered as explotation of children
these profiles should in the very least be kept private and come with proof of relation
