Boosting a model without having printing it

I see many model boosts when the booster has not printed the model. It seems to me that you can’t really evaluate the model until you have printed and assembled. Do I have a point, or am I being too picky?

I’ve seen user posts that they boosted a model just because they like the looks…
but in the end, that’s pretty much what a Boost is for…Boost the models you like.

But they are users that only Boost a model if they Maker will also boost theirs.
So trading Boosts is bad…JMO

You’re applying your values to what deserves a boost. Could just be the booster likes the model and wants to express that with more than a like.

Since they expire, it could also just be people giving them to someone so somebody gets use out of them.

And it can be boost traders at work gaming the system too.

If you suspect foul play, report them. If it just bugs you, think of this as time you could have spent printing.

I’ve boosted models that I thought were hilarious or a really great idea but didn’t download them myself. If I’m scrolling through and someone’s model makes me laugh, they’re probably getting a boost.

I boost models for 2 main reasons:
1: I think the idea is great and very cool.
2: The model is useful to me and helped me.

I send people boost when I see something take them a week or two to design, not going to print it but just for the hard work

I guess it depends on the person.
Roughly 80% of my boosts I gave to models I printed myself, they printed well and were useful.
The other 20% are models I don’t need and won’t print them, but the idea was great and unique (or funny).

When I receive a boost, I usually click on this person’s profile to see if there are any models that would interest me…And once I got a boost from someone who was very very much inspired by my model. Maybe plagiarism is too big a word but it was pretty close

I boosted a lot of newcomers with nice and original ideas, but I did not print them if I didn’t need the item.

  • Ratings are for the success or failure of a print
  • Boosts are for whatever purpose you deem necessary

I sometimes boost models I don’t print. Like if I see something and I think “Oh that’s such a good idea!” but it’s not for me, I’ll boost it.

I haven’t always printed all of the models I’ve boosted. I see awesome designs all the time though, and not all of them I’m entirely interested in printing, but I do want to further encourage those designs and the designers behind them.

Case closed then?

Pretty much… I mean - for the time it’s been present I think boost system isn’t too bad. There are obviously bad actors playing with the system, but for normal people case is simple: I boost models that I want to boost for my (non-nefarious) reasons.

As a creator - I’ve put a system “boost me” on maybe couple models, but I don’t do that any more. I feel like it’s better if the people find the “boost” button themselves and use it out of their own volition.

I’ll just say that I like models with a lot of parts and assembly. Sometimes I run into trouble with parts have problem orientations on the build plate, parts that might be omitted, or unclear assembly instructions. These problems are not knowable until printing is done.

Having said that, I will just shut up, enjoy the cool models, boost the designers and print away. Thanks everyone for the discussion.

I am afraid something was lost in translation. It wasn’t my intention to shut you up. I think that simply we all use ratings and comments to point out problems with models or prints.

Of course I am applying my values. Whose values should I be applying?

No problem. Print on! …

Exactly the same thing for me, suddenly I boost a model that i like, but i don’t need it… like a medieval bridge for the train
