not referring to the need to dry. Just trying to think out of the box.
Is there a situation that wet filament produces a good result?
I would guess it would be hard to get a consistent saturation. Making it impossible to dial in the right settings to get any useable effect. Obviously the standard setting would be useless.
I am thinking something like the variable shore TPU that foams based on the temperature. (just talking about the foaming aspect as an example.)
At least for some plastics, water can break the polymer strands in an irreversible manner leading to brittleness and breaks when it gets squeezed by filament feeders and odometers.
One person here immersed a spool in a bucket of water and in a few days the filament was spontaneously breaking all on its own. The thread is here somewhere with photos.
It may help with some plastics but I’m not aware of a single case. But maybe.
I wouldn’t use a whole spool for any tests though.
Thinking an AMS to use two rolls one wet one Dry. make most of the model out of dry for predictability. Maybe noisy surface on the outside and the wet filament on the top to get the random sputtering.
If there was some advantage, there might be some way to mitigate, minimize, or ignore.
PTFE tubing is regularly used on water lines to a refrigerator.
Brittleness could be a problem with some filaments. Stringing would also be a problem in some cases. Could be fine with the top texture for a box. One change and it purges into a tower. before it starts sputtering over the top suface.
Could be the sputtering causes a good layer mixing improving layer bonding. Just a guess of a possible.
