What material are car rearview mirrors made of?
It could be ABS or Nylon?
Mine says >PP< : polypropylene
Yeah. Non-impact interior areas are generally PP. Dash and door trims are usually PP too. It’s less expensive than ABS by about 25%. Car manufacturers are always looking to save pennies on components. It adds up. There are a lot of parts in a car, and a lot of cars being made.
Almost all plastic automotive parts have the plastic type embossed someone on the part. There’s actually a standard for it, ISO 11469, though there’s no legal requirement to follow it, most do.
Thanks, but, What is PP?
Most of the molded aftermarket parts and OEM parts are actually ABS and marked so. As far as fabricating in filament. PP can be pricey.
When I had to fabricate a bracket for my side mirror which was going to see temp extremes, lots of shock and vibe and salt spray, I ended up using PA Nylon. As far as nylon goes, it’s fairly easy to print and it gave me very good results. In my use case, I was looking for something that would flex and withstand temp extremes. PP is reputed to be king at flexibility but I went cheap. So far the PA bracket has held up well. This winter will tell.
This is the Sunlu filament I used but I fear it may have been discontinued and I got it at clearance prices because it hasn’t come back in stock. But look at the specs and you’ll see why I chose it for a mirror bracket. I’m sure there is other PA filament out there that will do the job.
I paid $27 for it back in April of this year.
If you’re in australia etc I might even opt to use something like PA6-CF which will resist nearly 200C before giving up. Looks fancy for a car, too. Being at the roofline of the interior means it is subject to the hottest greenhouse environment your car can produce
