Cleaning filament to aid in complex multilateral prints?

From the long running thread on support material for PETG, it seems it’s very hard to get a good combination. My understanding is that this is due to nozzle/material temperatures and cross contamination? Is there any sense in running a cleaning filament through, with a broad suitable temperature range to assist with this? If so, anyone done it? Was thinking something might be able to be added to the filament end g-code.

The issue is cross-contamination more so than temperature. PETG doesn’t stick to itself very well if there’s any PLA mixed in. The solution doesn’t require any “invention” though, you just need to bump up the purge volume for switches to PETG from PLA. Yeah, it wastes the primary filament to do that, but the printer can do it without manual intervention. And since you should only be using PLA for support interfaces, provided the model doesn’t require supports on every layer, the waste is minimal…

The problem that needs to be solved here isn’t any different from when you’re printing with color filament. Especially going to White from any darker color, you might need a high purge volume to ensure that “white” is actually “white” when it’s extruded…
