Cleaning the Nozzle Tip

Hello,

I have some PLA gunk that has collected on my nozzle tip. I read online that it is recommended to heat the nozzle to 250 and use a brass brush to gently wipe it clean. Any thoughts or advice on this? Thanks!

Except, there is no such brass brush. It is steel brush coated in brass color.

Brass is stiff and not springy like stainless steel wire brush.

We do you metal wire brush to clean up nozzle from time to time.

Just be careful, 250C is very hot obviously.

Remove toolhead cover…

Take the sock off while its cool and clean it (note the orientation, opening on the side nearest the lidar). Heat up the hot-end without the sock and clean the nozzle with your brush. Let cool to room temp and then hit the nozzle and lidar with alcohol, put the sock back on.

Replace toolhead cover…

yes you can get a small brass wire brush if the gunk is really stuck on but most of the time you can get it clean with a kitchen paper towel.
However you should not heat it up to 250 for PLA, 200 will be fine for cleaning purposes.

who told you that myth?

I guess I was wrong. Brass brush do exist.

It’s just that all of my brass brushes corroded at the root of the wire with red-ish oxidation after brushing something wet. I don’t see that oxidation color on the brass fitting for water pipe though

I still have my brass brushes from when I owned 3D printers before Bambu Lab.

I have used them with my BL printers.

Take the sock off first or you will tear into to it.

Warm, not hot.

Think toothbrush rather than saw when using.

Thanks, everyone. I have seen videos but have never done it. Does the sock just pull off?

Yes, you would give it a gentle tug and it comes right off. Adding it on is equally easy, it is kept their by friction, no clips or other locking mechanisms to worry about.

I always have clean the filament from the outside of the nozzles increasing their temperature to 210ºC and removing the filament with a kitchen paper towel. Very fast and the nozzle cleans completely. No risks, no harms.

Got it. I assume you wear gloves to protect your hands from the heat?

Where is the fun in that? Second degree burns are surely a badge of honour.

For dumb people, that is called humour.

Right!? I am sure Bambu Lab would issue me a badge on my profile.

Well brass is relatively corrosion resistant and if it corrodes then it will be more of a greenish color. There are however steel brushes that are plated for added corrosion resistance and depending on the plating they can have a similar appearance like brass on the exterior but those are sold as steel and not brass wire brushes.

No, simply fold the towel to a decent thickness and wipe in a fast movement.
