Collaborative MakerWorld Projects - The best idea of 2025

@MakerWorld I have an idea that is revolutionary and could change the world of 3D model repositories as we know it… I’d like to outline it for you and then accept all comments, criticisms, and random rude remarks that anyone feels like throwing at me. As far as I know, if implemented, MakerWorld would be the first to have something like this.

Collaborative projects, or alternatively, two designers - one model. Can you image two of the brightest designers here working on a project together? I can’t, my imagination isn’t that powerful!

Here’s how it would work:

Creation
An option in your MW profile would allow you to turn on or off if you were open to collaborations. Let’s face it, if you couldn’t turn it off @Josh-3D would be flooded with requests to collaborate daily. He would get tired of rejecting them and I would get tired of sending them. If the option was on someone could send an invite and if accepted a blank project would be opened but set to private with both creators being listed. It would show under both creators models.

Ideally this is something both creators would have already spoken about through DMs and agreed to, not just blindsided with a request to collaborate on a Hueforge with articulated legs.

Points and contests
This is the part I would love suggestions on. 50/50 on points? It would be awesome if there was a special contest badge for a “Collaborative Model” winner.

Benefits

  1. Being the first 3D model repository to offer it.
  2. Allowing creators from around the world to work together and create amazing things.
  3. Fostering a mentoring environment for seasoned creators to work with people who are still learning.
    4. Allowing me to ride the coattails of someone smarter and much more talented than myself.

Room for growth
If it turns out to be a success maybe the option for more than two creators? I know “too many chefs spoil the broth” could be a thing with too many people though.

So what say the people?

That part (and the room for growth) have sold me out. Where do I sign?

Joke aside, collaborative 3D projects aren’t a new idea (I know of several makers working together on a number of interesting projects), but if the idea would be generalized and implemented by Makerworld, that would indeed make the approach novel and (at this time) unique among the existing 3D sharing platforms.

Have you seen @Rossero’s thread asking for something close to that?

I thought about something similar, but for “exclisive remixes” - a lot of people rightly criticise exclusive model program for forbiding remix culture that made 3d printing such explorative venue… Maybe coop on models or exclusive base-work would be possible?

Anyway - I like the idea.

I missed that whole thread, I just read it and this would be perfect for something like that. Your “exclusive remixes” idea sounds great too.

And it really worked!

Here is the end result:

♫ Mini ♪ Marble ♫ Music ♪ Machine ♬ by Rossero - MakerWorld

Not yet fully pleased with the additional noise so this is not the end for the project but @DrJones created a fully customizable music roll for it in OpenSCAD:

Mini Marble Music Machine Melody Maker by DrJones - MakerWorld

I also had a lot of helpful input from others, both on this forum and the Wintergatan discord server. I think collaborating in this way can be extremely fruitful, but finding the right projects might be hard. I also designed some more experimental 3D printers of which one foldable core XZ for which a friend created the code, things like that

I think it would be cool if we had some tools within Makerworld for collaborative projects. Particularly within a given model, if it could be setup where one could add contributors, and could get a slice of that point pie too.

As a base to open up exclusive remixes could be interesting too. I like the exclusive program, but it does close things down in a way through it’s licensing terms. It would be nice to have an official means to support mods/addons and such without getting in the way of the license.

Now the real question though is, how will people manage to abuse it, and how can we attempt to address that before hand. Haha.

@Rossero that’s a cool marble run!
