Combining different filament types

Is it possible to print filament of different types together?

So PLA Basic with PLA Silk or PTEG?

Yes.

  • But choose combinations wisely. For example, PETG will not bond well with PLA but may be a good choice for 0 offset interface layers if the supported layer is not free floating.
  • You need to be careful about setting all Min/Max filament temperatures to a region where all filament types are liquid AND do not experience heat creep or even exceed their decomposition temp. Otherwise, clogs are pretty much assured.

Here’s a trick I learned when mixing disimilar filaments. You have to watch the filament closely or simply put pauses in the area where there is transition. Then boost the temperature up temporarily for the next 5 layers by 10-20c. Since all filaments typically in use on a Bambu Lab printer melt at 250C, that would be a safe temp to run at. But I’ve gone as high as 270 when transitioning between PETG and PC. I haven’t tried it with PLA but if you’re mixing Silk with Basic, just remember that Silk likes it 10-20c hotter anyway. The theory of going super hot is that it will better force layer adhesion between the two dissimilar filaments.

If I were you, I’d create a cube primitive on the plate that is 10x10x30mm That will give you a tall stick without wasting a lot of filament. Then after the filament change and cool down of the print, see if you can break them apart. For silk, that’s not a good test because silk comes apart when you just look at it. :wink: but for other filaments it will work. You may have to put in a layer modifier to increase the infill density between the transition layers.
