Considering P1P /AMS Combo - Question

I’m an avid model railroader and am strongly considering the P1P with AMS. But for the life of me I cannot verify the required space requirements for this printer. I have seen the quoted dimensions of 15.2" wide by 15.3" deep by 18" high, and I assume the AMS adds to the height. But is there a recommended WxD space requirement (height is not an issue in my office). Thanks.

I wonder it this is a duplicate. I just answer this yesterday, when I went and actually measured from the wall to the front edge of my P1P at 18 inches. That includes the room needed for the power cord to stick straight out from the back of the machine and then bend the cord with a radius that does not cause damage.

Thanks Julie… No, not a duplicate. The above was my first post on this forum. What about width? I have about 18.5". If the printer is 15.2, that gives me a little over 1.5" free space on either side. Is that adequate? Thanks.

I realized that my last response was to someone asking the same question about an X1.

It will be tight.
The printer is about 15 1/4 wide, but you need room to get to the poop. I created a chute that fits in the space behind the printer that the cord requires. It barely protrudes past the side of the printer. I set a small bin there to collect the poop. Of course you do not have to center the printer and you can print a bin that fits. In your situation my solution for poop management is very useful because you do not have to remove the chute.

The bigger issue is the spool holder. with that amount of space you will not be able to mount the spool on the back or the side. You will need to have a minimum 9" above the printer for the spool holder, unless you want to run a long filament guide tube to another location. I went and measured and my setup is 17" tall with a normal size spool mounted.

I actually designed my spool holder to not stick out to the back any farther than the poop chute. I originally had a top mount that was great and had the side of the spool facing the front and I did not like having to lean over to see how much filament was left. I also wanted to have two spools. (It is still a work in progress.)

An aside: While trying to cover the mirror, because my printer is currently on a dresser, I managed to catch the edge of the printer and jerk it into the air and drop it. I was absolutely amazed. It was in the middle of a print and did not skip a beat.

Thank you Julie for taking the time to offer your advice. I have 22" printer front to rear wall so that sounds like adequate depth. And I am actually looking at the AMS unit (4 spools) and I have no height limitations, so I think I am good to go. Now to get over the cost

On a related note, what do most folks use for filament for small (ish - n scale buildings) models? PLA? I have several on my layout (Etsy, eBay etc) made with FDM printers and of course the quality varies with the code and the operator, but most are quite nice. And are there good price-competitive sources of supply for PLA? Thanks.

Hello Julie,
I really like the spool holder you created. Would you be willing to share more information about or a file? Thank you and take care.

I was having problems with my previous supplier never having the colors I needed.
I recently switched to buying Sunlu PLA+ on ebay. I use the listings for buy 3 get 1 free and that works out to between $15 and $16 per Kg.

I will leave this post open to remind me and see if I can get it in a shareable state soon. I am still not happy with the filament guide part. It is not even glued in right now.

I really appreciate it. I would like to not have the spool on the back and this will make clearance for my magnetic wrap around “chute”.

@Bear What CAD program are you using?

I spend most of my time in Solidworks, but I have AutoCAD, Fusion360, Libre, CATIA, Revit, Rhino and Inventor.

@Bear I am in the process of making the Fusion 360 design presentable and understandable. I hope to have it done today and then I will send you a link.

@Bear I send you a message.

Can I have the F360 file also? How does it mount to the printer?

I freaked out when I thought you meant you were gluing it to the printer.
